News "No One Lives Forever" and sequels - for free!

Hard to believe it, but it's true.

According to PC Gamer, the acclaimed classic FPS and its sequels are available for free, along with several other games like "Command & Conquer: Red Alert" and "Starcraft". Moreover, they've been patched to work with widescreen monitors.

It's important to note that, since this comes from a reliable industry publication, we're not talking about warez. According to the article, it's 100% abandonware.

Oh no no no no no, no one is being repacked and given away by fans because "As it stands, no one can even agree which company owns the rights to this classic stealth FPS" ,just the fact that companies argue about it means that it's not abandoned, which means that if they straighten it out they will go after them, the other ones are free giveaways from the companies themselves but still 100% looked after and not abandonware free.

Starcraft forces you to download the new version.

I played through both games for the first time. I had heard about them back in the day but never got around to them. The atmosphere and story are excellent and some of the level design is quite creative for its time. The second game is especially hilarious. The gameplay is somewhat clunky though and the stealth mechanics don't work that well, compared to say Thief or Deus Ex. Both games sometimes crash and have various performance issues on modern PCs, but are still playable and can be completed.

Remember picking up NOLF2 from the discount bin back in the day. Seemed interesting, played through a couple levels.

What I'm more curious about are these games tied up in legal limbo. This appears to happen quite frequently with older video games in a way that doesnt seem to happen in other media (never hear about music/movies/TV being "tied up in legal limbo so no one knows who owns the property).

Can anyone shed more light on this phenomena?

Some of them are legit but the NOLF site seems shifty. As soon as I see NO CD cracks I think of days back in the warez scene.
