I don't understand the deal with tips. The servers should be paid a normal wage, and if they are not then they are at the very least entitled to minimum wage by law. What exactly do they do? Bring the food, drinks, and bill. Wow. Oh, I guess they also annoy with their "do you need help with anything" or "is everything okay?" every few minutes. Yes everything is fine, I don't need you to feed me. Go away, leave us alone. Leave a pitcher so we can refill our own drinks.
I don't know why waiters in the US feel like it's their right to get a tip, no matter how the service was. I remember when we went to a restaurant in LA, the waiter was crap, he didn't know anything about the wine list and couldn't offer any suggestions, he couldn't tell us much at all about the menu, he never asked us if our meal was okay, he kept trying to take away plates with food still on them and people still eating off them, and then right at the end he actually had the gall to ask us for a 20% tip. What an asshole.

Personally, I always leave a tip, 15% for poor service, 30% for good. More if the service was exceptional. However, it galls me when restaurants add gratuity to the bill. An 18% gratuity added to the bill usually gets subtracted from whatever I would have normally tipped. Having said that, if I'm there with a large group of people, then having a minimum gratuity is more acceptable because of the effort that goes into serving larger groups.
Still, a tip is not a right and patrons are under no obligation to leave one. On the same token, the patrons are under no obligation to continue to go to the establishment if they felt the food or service was poor.
If you don't believe me, then that's your problem.Shens to the bolded and likely your whole story.
