Be specific. What is a "surprisingly large number"?
How is a first-hand account not specific?

That roommate is far from the only 1st-hand anecdote I have... only the most recent (VERY recent). It's extremely easy to find junkies selling their foodstamps.

You just made a generalization about 40 million people with your anecdote of one roommate. Be specific - you know, with data - when you say "a surprisingly large number [trade food stamps for drugs]"

Oh, get out of here with that dismissive nonsense. You did too. The difference between us is you presume that nearly none of them do and I openly acknowledge that a surprisingly high number of them do. The one of us generalizing about more of the 40 million is you, buddy

My generalization specifically acknowledges that it is a visible portion of a whole (NOT all) based on real-world experience. If a boy scout like me has witnessed it over and over and over in my life then it is relatively common even if it is impossible to know how common. Don't be obtuse.

Don't put words in my mouth. I never asserted that "nearly none of them do".

...except by objecting to assertions that any notable amount of them do.

Didn't I suggest not being obtuse? You are insufferable.
Who's really obtuse? You came flying into the discussion with your anecdotes and think they magically apply to some large number of people. If you want to have an informed conversation, it should be grounded in data, not some bullshit anecdotes about some deadbeat roommates and the guy you once saw doing some random thing.

You know they can't possibly have accurate data to know how widespread it is when it is illegal and done in secret so you can really only know how prevalent it is by collecting anecdotes... which is another kind of data. I love how you demand data and then reject data without shame.

Go on and put your head in the sand if you want, but it's still obvious to everyone.

so anyway, back to the coronavirus

everything is preparing to open up around me and my uncle in his 60s went to a packed bowling alley/bar and got drunk a couple nights ago. my grandma chewed him out but he says he's done being cooped up, he's going out no matter what.

hopefully the worst of it is over but we shall see

I would hope so, but I share the same concerns that many of the public health experts have: that this rush to reopen everything and the very blasé attitude that many have will result in a spike in infections. We haven't used this time of stay-at-home orders to really bolster the testing and contact tracing necessary to keep new outbreaks from cropping up and exploding.

100 million masks a day is an absolutely insane number. There are only 300 million people in the USA and we shouldn't be throwing away one mask per American every 3 days. Mostly healthcare workers need to be using and disposing them frequently, not the general public.
The reason they're telling people not to wear N95 is that there aren't enough of them for health care professionals. If there were, there would be no good reason to admonish people for wearing N95, that would only help.

Hope won't do much, the renewed outbreaks are 100% inevitable.

Say a prayer for your uncle... and everyone like him. Looks like madness has the USA by the throat. It's gonna be nasty.
Got it - so you don't have data to back up your anecdote. Thanks for chiming in with that useful tidbit.
The percentage of food stamp recipients who trade their food stamps for drugs is one data point nobody will ever have any kind of handle on, my friend.

No bueno. People in need are getting into desperate territory.
Sucks too, because while we're in fine shape, there's tons of folks on SSI that aren't. Fixed income (and very little), economy all fucked up, and you're gonna make sure they're the last recipients? Garbage.

All this shit opening up like this? How so many people are being stupid on this matter? I think we barely started and this is me being optimistic. I had other thoughts involving a particular group and their anti vaccine shit too and their total disregard for others but that will trigger someone. I will keep quiet on that matter unless its brought up elsewhere later then i may have more to say on that.

The things I'm seeing on TV news are very worrying. I can accept people arguing that people are suffering extreme financial hardship and pressures that they are in no shape to deal with. But doing it while obviously engaging in risky behavior in terms or virus spread forces me to believe that they are very badly informed in terms of what's afoot. And doing it with AR15's in hand just reinforces that impression. Many of these people are for the most part acting out, going for the street theater adrenaline thrill of protesting. And their claims that it's a matter of first amendment rights or personal freedom and that the government has no right to ask them to alter their behavior shows that they are sorely lacking in understanding of civic responsibility and governments' role in modern human life.

The government has the right to ask citizens to do anything it likes and citizens have the right to tell the government to f**k off.
