Finally had the experience of building a computer, so far all is okay except I used a HD which already had a OS installed on it (so I'm waiting for my friend to return my Windows XP CD). Now my question is, the "greyish" dry material on the retail Heatsink/Fan thermal compound? I'm asking because I wasn't sure if I was supposed to remove the 'greyish material' before applying Arctic Silver 5. Right now I'm running 50 degrees celcius with stock cooling is this normal? (in bios screen so I'm guessing idle). The case I ordered didn't include a case fan which I have on order from NewEgg so I expect it to drop 5 celcius or so when it comes in. Reason I'm asking is because I'm not sure if I installed the heatsink properly. Thanks for the answers in advance take it easy on me heh.

yes, that greyish material was the the thermal pad, and you were suppossed to remove it from the processor. You should get noticably cooler temps after you take off the heatsink, clean both it and the cpu, and reinstall it with AS5

How should I go about cleaning the thermal pad + AS5 off? (I dabbed on a little bit of AS5 just in case)

I would scrape off all I could then use acetone or alcohol to remove the rest. You may want to use a very fine sandpaper (1000 grit or higher) ro make sure everything is a smooth as possible, then clean with alcohol again and apply your thermal past.

What kink of MB are you using?

If I were you I wouldnt touch it & leave it be,50c idle is pretty common temp.

You're not supposed to use BOTH the pad & as5 but since you allready have it on there I would leave it be.

Well I fixed the pad problem, wiped it off with alcohol and then applied AS5. Not noticing any difference in temperature. I'm using the Chaintech VNF3-250 mobo, could it be a error in bios reading?

that motherboard read temp much higher than they actualy are, unless you start seeing over 70c temps I would not worry about it.

I have the same board & touching the heatsink that's ice cold the temps still read about 45c so it's about 20 degrees off.

Hmm.. I noticed under SiSandra, it reports my temperature as being 29 degrees Celcius idle, I guess I'll do a touch check.
