I have been told many things and this is what I have come to believe is the correct order of operations
my system specs are, gigabyte k8ns main board, athlon 64 3000, Win XP, and soon Western Digital 120 gig Sata hd. I dont think anthing else is relavent.

1 Set boot to cdrom is bios

2 set Sata drive to 2nd boot

3rd put windows xp in cdrom

4th turn off comp and uninstall old pata drive

5th install new sata drive with WD secure connect

6th restart comp if windows recognises hd just keep going with windows
if not then press f6 to install drivers from WD boot disk

7th go along for windows ride and when done shutdown to switch to sata as 1st boot

8th enjoy installing motherboard drivers and updating all the rest of hardware drivers.

9th anything I missed?

Thank you whom ever helps me out here.

Pretty much the way except:
4th turn off comp and uninstall old pata drive
You don't have to uninstall the driver nor the HD...just turn it off in the BIOS

That looks fine to me, but you might as well uninstall your PATA drive and install your SATA drive first, then immediately boot into the BIOS and change the boot order, then reboot to the XP installation CD.

Is there any reason you want to uninstall the PATA drive?

ok if you have more patas, remove all
what is wd secure connect ? nah u dont need that
u need the f6, no such thing as pass it, windows install starts u hit f6 like ur crazy and then install CORRECT drivers (make sure you got the right ones, coulple tricky things there depending on what mobo you got, and they dont come from wd disk but from mobo or sata card disk
rest is good

I did not mean to uninstall drivers. I have 2 HDs going now. i want to leave the backup in and take out the main one im running right now. after I get the info off that drive I want to wipe the old main one clean and run it as my backup. if that makes sense.

for the period of install you need to either have the old drives powered down
if you do not do that you will have windows installed on a drive letter like F instead of C, that is because sata came along at a later time and it is viewed by bios as a secondary controller and cannot take C if pata drives are present

I have a gigbyte n force3 K8NS 250 board. my mobo cd has a silicon image raid utility but it will not let me click it (what is that?)and i went to the gigabyte website and it does not have anthing about sata or raid for my board. i have 2 sata inputs on here and every time I boot up i see that it is looking for a sata drive. where else can I get the sata drivers?

you got a cd with your mobo right ? it should all be there

the raid question is a bit tricky, for one you need more than one hdd to run raid, second you must see what has the raid, sata or pata, third which connectors have raid, then you must be sure you use clean hdds, cuz setting up raid will delete all
Id say, for now, leave it be

That's not necessarily true. The nForce3 chipset SATA controller is recognized by the Windows installer.

I didnt say its written in stone, but it saves headaches if your sata isnt recognized by win, because you know the f6 dissapears and if windows didnt find your sata you gotta start over

so coejus you are saying that i dont need to install drivers? because I cannot find to the Sata drivers. All I can find is for silicon image and giga raid on the mobo cd, not anthing about Sata. The only place i found Sata drivers was from the Western digital cd.

Hello All,

Powerup, I too have an SATA drive on order and will be doing the same as you, did you have any problems installing the drive or did all go smooth?

Any advice would be gratefully received!

Chris.
