I just recently started a new job and one of the projects that was given me was to find out how to clear out some information (IP address, etc.) from a set of Cisco items. One item is a 2900 series XL, the other is a 2600 series router. They are not on a network. How do I connect my PC to them (physically and logically) to allow me access to the configuration and once in, how do I clear if I don't have the password.

Hit me up at Jnorman@wrightrobinson.com if you have any suggestions.

Try Here for password ercovery

You can establish a hyperterminal session assuming you have the correct cable via a COM port or telnet if they are on the network and you know or can find out the IP address.

What is the correct cable? I assume I can't go in through one of the 24 ports, and their is a console port on the back. What type of cable do I need to connect?

if u set a root password on the router... tough luck...u cant log in an clear it... (i not 100% sure if u can reset it to defualt without login in.

do u now the IP of the switch? default IP i think is 10.0.0.1

do u now the IP of the router? default IP i think is 10.0.0.1

- not going to belisted anywhere, unless u have some documetns that u put them in

You would connect them with either serial or NIC ,( set a static IP of 10.0.0.2 and gateway 10.0.0.1)

if u have serial u can hyperterminal into it..

My job is level 2/level 3 support. These are the only two cisco devices they have and they want to wipe them to get rid of them. no cisco requirements to get job. More MCSE stuff, which I know, never went/wanted to go Cisco rout(er).

Can use a crossover or a com cable with RJ-45 connector at one end and a 9 pin female connector at the other. There are also sub/RJ45 connectors too. Don't have a part number for you.

If I have physical access tot eh router/switch, I like the com cable method using hyperterminal. Personal preference. One of my engineer friends prefers telnet with a crossover.

Actually I want to erase all data in the switch and the router. Currently hooked through hyperterminal to the 2600 router. I am going through the password recovery procedure. The secret password is encrypted in "write terminal" but went through "configure terminal" to "enable secret (password)". Does it change the secret password to whatever I put after secret when I am doing this?

Alrighty ... heres an update. Thanx to Malk-a-mite over at I have found a Password Recovery Procedure. I have been able to go through the "configure terminal" to "enable secret ***", but that doesn't seem to help me be able to login. What's the difference between a secret password and the password and how do I login with the secret instead of the regular. Does the "enable secret ***" even change the secret password?

Now, dphantom at Anandtech has given me a site to reset the configuration of my router, but I need the password, so you see the impasse that I am in.

Whats the next step?

Ok, I went back through the procedure and "enable secret ***" and "enable password ***" followed by a config-register 0x2102, then wrote it to memory. Still can't get in.

Ok, I'm tapped out. Sorry I haven't been more helpful.

I've had to recover passwords a couple times before off 1600/2500 routers and 3548 switch and the procedure did work. Anybody else out there with more Cisco experience can help him out???

Nopers, don't be worried. I got them both taken care of. DPhantom I used your early post for the 2900 series XL to get it reset and I used another guys post for the 2600. I am all good, they are scratched clean. Thanx for the help.
