Which of the following is better?
HDMI to DVI, or
(mini-)Display Port to DVI?

I would be grateful if you can give your reasoning for saying one over another. Thanks.

They should be equal in terms of image quality. Digital to digital.

That's agreed. The difference lies in the supported resolutions of eg hdmi version (1,0 etc) vs dvi, that got the best options in that regard.
..and sound btw..

Display port got far better resolution options than hdmi.

Mis understood the question.

Id imagine since they both end up as converted to DVI, the results would be the same.
Any benefit Displayport would have over HDMI would be lost? when converted to DVI (again just guessing).

Not knowing if it has any relevance, but I would expect the opposite. Why would displayport loose it's advantage. Displayport has more in common with dvi, than hdmi with dvi.

But that's also not knowing for sure and a bet is on.

Quick google reveals a displayport to dual-dvi adapter. Confirms what I said. You have more options with displayport and hence displayport to dvi. Beer expected from bet won.

Thanks, folks. I should really put things in context.

I've just invested in a HD7850 card and I'm just looking at what is the best option of hooking up the 'second' monitor (my panels only have DVI and D-Sub). The first monitor will be DVI to DVI.

It would make no difference. There are adapters that go either way.

They make cables that go directly from HDMI to DVI-D without the use of an adapter. They are however, only single link DVI. If you need Dual Link DVI you need an adapter.

Do note that you need an "active" adapter for display port to properly work from my limited reading. I've seen numerous posts complaining about various adapters simply not working. Before you buy, research the adapter you're looking at.
