well that just stinks! i'm one of the people that prefer the dual GPU on a single card. i did my first crossfire setup with 6970s and it's unbearably loud under full load. my 5970 that i replaced never got even a fraction as loud as these do.

i'm definitely getting a single card dual gpu setup though. probably nvidia this time so i can start rocking the asus 120hz as my primary display. i'll toss one of my *old* 6970s in my wife's pc so she can deal with the loudness of crossfire, then use the other as a paperweight.

it's a shame nvidia doesn't loosen up it's sli compatibility like amd has. i like having the option of adding another single GPU to a dual GPU card.

How are the 6970's arranged in your case?
The AT HD6970 review mentioned noise and temperature problems if two cards are right next to each other.

I hope the temperature and noise of this monster card will be in acceptable range. Otherwise it will be end up just like GTX 480 (hot and noisy).

Or collecting dust as it sits on a shelf due to being too hot and too noisy. As much as I want to see this in action, I highly doubt I will get one. My next card needs to have some nice performance, but also be cool and quiet. I really like my 5750 fanless on my HTPC. Unfortunately, I am still not a "fan" of their drivers, and really do prefer Nvidia's solution.

I love how cyclical these things are... Went from an ATI Mach32 -> 3Dfx Voodoo -> Voodoo2 -> GeForce2 -> ATI 9800 AIW Pro -> GeForce 7800 GTX -> 8800GT -> Core 216* -> 5750*

The "*"s indicate cards still in use.

The 580 has great thermals and acoustics with the Vapour Chamber cooling system, I see no reason why the 590 should be any different...
I would be more concerned with the 6990 with the single blower style system!

Can you name a time when you couldnt get a 5870/5850 on a major e-tailer site? The first 2-3 weeks were slim, but after that, there was always one available. (5970 not included). I think limited supply is bogus, they sold a ton of 5XXX cards.

This dual card is going to be a monster, so is the AMD version. I bet nV takes the crown just because of how well GF110 overclocks.

yes, there were always some 58x0 cards available, but AMD could have made a lot more money if they hadn't been supply-constrained b/c they would have dropped prices/increased volume substantially. Of course, nvidia would have made it to market sooner if tsmc hadn't been sleepwalking, so AMD's advantage wouldn't have lasted as long, either.

If Nvidia saw any chance the 6990 would outperform the 590 at lesser wattage, I'm pretty sure they'd scrap the card altogether.

no, they'd just be very liberal with how they got to 300w ala gtx 480.

I still find it odd that there hasn't been an official announcement from nVidia. AMD announced the 6990 even before the 6950/6970 launched. They also just showcased it a few days ago and it looks ready to be launched.

All we've seen from the 590 is a PCB shot.

remember what JHH said a few years ago: when you don't have anything you talk about future products. NV did such a great job with gtx 5x0 that they have earned the right to talk about "future offerings" for a few months imho. As long as they can sneak out a weak/paper launch by the end of april I think they'll be ok, and that's even assuming that AMD gets their act together and gives us a 6990 before mar 1. You haven't seen anything on gtx 590 b/c JHH appears to have learned his lesson and no longers uses mockups to showcase his new cards.

Can't wait to see this go up against the 6990. It should be a good fight; and if Nvidia wins this round, you could always use the 6990 as a foundation to build a house. Heck, its so big, you could probably build a little hut off of it. :awe:

??

The 69XX cards also use vapour chambers, and they consume less watts than a 580 (hence less heat to dissipate). Is the 590 gonna have 2 fans? Otherwise it will run into the same problem that a single fan cooler on a 6990 would have. Only major difference will be noise I think.

Why is NVidia being so secretive about this? I mean, AMD has thrown down the gauntlet as far as their Antilles (6990) card is concerned. The more important question would be which card (6990 vs. 590) would perform better for surround gaming (triple monitor setups) and ultra-high resolutions. There better be some damn good tests like the ones on Hardware Heaven.

Good thing I decided to wait for the release of both these cards!

Where are all the members that said a gtx580/570 card was not possible? The gtx560 x2 was the best Nvidia can do.

They are probably still looking for that 485/490 that never materialized.

Ahh, it did its called the gtx580. And most thought that would not happen either. I remember the chant, to hot ,to power hungry and unmanufacturable.

We got, less power, less heat, less noise and 17% more performance from a gtx580. :hmm:

Next we had, there is no way they will make a card with 2 gtx570/580 on a card. There might be agtx560 x2 at best, and we got 2 gtx580 chips.

next we will get, it will never beat a 6990, just like the 6970 was going to faster then the gtx580. What happend? A 6970 can't even beat a gtx570.

So what do you think will happen next?

Careful there. In fact the 6970 can beat the gtx570 depending on res and settings so your statement is false.

However, I do understand what your saying about rumors and the "facts" behind them. We all just have to wait until cards are actually available before any judgements can be made. Though even then future driver releases can cause huge swings in the performance comparison though that is less common.

Odd... Last I checked a 580 wasn't dual 480/470s... Maybe I just didn't look hard enough.

Sarcasm aside, they are still yet to beat the 5970 after nearly a year and a half, so I don't know what your going on about. I think you need to calm down a bit.

It will be good to see the 5970 displaced be it from AMD or nV. Wake me up when this thing shows up.

Remember these?

There are 2 others, but I'm too lazy to find them.

Last I checked, the drivers , erratic framerates, crap tessalation performance, and piss poor minimums, beat this card, Nvidia didn't have to.

But thats another topic for another thread about older ELO'ed cards that people paid 700$ for that never got great drivers.

So the 490 exists? Can you show me a link to one for sale?

So how about those 2 gtx580 chips on one card? any real, non biased ,non nvidia bashing, non AMD thoughts in a nvidia thread or non-derailing thoughts?

Listen to the crickets............................

Not going to answer my question then huh? Because they never made a dual 104 or 100 card...

I guess my answer like when all the news about 490 was around. I'll believe it when I see it.

Wow, says the one who went on a crusade a few posts back regarding AMD cards and rumored performance. Pot meet kettle?

As for this card I will just wait and see. Since they are claiming it will be the full meal deal core (at least nordichardware is) I'm curious how low they will have to clock everything to stay within the spec. And with those low clocks, how much headroom the cooler will have to increase the clocks without burning the card up. If they improve SLI scaling with this and the cooling is up to snuff there could be some serious performance to be had with a good OC on the card.

Looks faster to me.

Care to backup what you said? Or are you pulling stuff out off thin air like usual?
Im still waiting for that GTX490/495 you kept posting about.

Anyone know what PLX chip they will be using? Sapphire improved the performance of the 5970 toxic not just by higher clocks, but with a better PLX chip (I think that gave it the edge over the ARES). Not sure what the differences were, but it seemed more robust.
