Excellent historical footage.

If anyone is able to provide an accurate translation of the clip, it would be greatly appreciated!

I love the tone of the woman's voice. You can almost guess at what she is saying just by the way she talks

I find N. Korea fascinating ever since I read a story about an American that was allowed into the place. It seemed so classic 1950s dictatorship.

They are so in love with their country. They would all die for it.

Amazing brainwashing. If only Stewie could get his hands on such power, he could dominate the world.

Do you have a slightest idea what the woman says?

It goes like this:
.... Horray! Horray! Horray! (Man-sei, in Korean). With victory and pride, infinite happiness, passion and great admiration, we are marching in front of our invincible, steel-hearted beloved Supreme General Kim Jung-Il...." and repeating it again and again and again.......

Blah Blah Blah.

Yeah, being Korean, I do understand what the woman says. And no, I have no stomach to translate all this loathing propaganda.

You think America is brainwashed? Please, pack your baggage and go to NK and spend a month or so. You will learn the true meaning of "Brainwash".

There was an incident a year ago or so when NK's athletes visited South Korea. During their stay, there was a raining day, and somehow their "beloved" General's picture was soaked (actually, his father, Kim Il-Sung's). The athletes were not only angry, they were in great pain and agony, they protested the authority to explain how that had happend... with most of them crying!

Seriously, this country is a royal mess and a mockery of human society. Do you know their radio and TV has only 1 channel fixed? Gosh....

You know, freedom is something that you cannot realize its importance unless you are deprived of it. Some of guys in the states just don't get how it is like to live such a condition. Just you have no clue at all.

Thank you very much for the partial translation littlebig!

Rest assured, there are many Americans who are sympathetic toward the plight of North Koreans, and who would genuinely like to learn more about what can be done to empower them with a voice in their own government.

If it isn't too uncomfortable for you, please reconsider translating the remainder of the video clip for the people who may have never before been exposed to "true" government propaganda.

So little information about North Korea reaches the outside world, only a very small amount of it is ever translated into English. I'm sure there are many people here who simply have no idea just how pervasive and overwhelming the personality cult of Kim Jong-Il truly is for people who live in North Korea.

Taking the time to translate rare material like this into English, may help remind some of the more sheltered Americans here what the face of true "propaganda" really looks like.

Thanks again, littlebig!

littlebig, you're getting all warmed up for the wrong reasons. FYI, I lived in Eastern Europe during the last decades of communism... I've even seen Albania. There's nothing that North Korean media says that doesn't sound awfully familiar. I don't speak a word of Korean, but I'm willing to bet I can provide a continuation of the text that may not be literal, but very much in the spirit - and more or less the same vocabulary - as the beginning you've supplied to us.

And yet, I don't believe Aimster's claim that "North Korea stands for 1 man
United States stands for freedom for all. "... that's bogus. No, that IS propaganda, and a successful one at that. And I've seen things in the States that made my hair stand up, when it comes to propaganda. Not to mention that a larger number of people actually believe the government's propaganda in the U.S. than probably even in N. Korea. Bread and circus is much more efficient as a tool, when you're trying to rule, and make them love you, as opposed to starving them and make them simply pay lip-service and develop "double-thinking", like I've seen again and again under Communism - even in those countries where there was one radio/TV channel...

AnitaPeterson, my upset tone in the reply did not direct to your post, but rather the video itself. If it bothered you, I apologize.

That said, I think you are doing completely wrong analogy here. Well, yes, US goverment sometimes can be very good at propaganda, especially war times (or when they think it is). But, that is no comparison, even remotely closed to what has been done and still going on on NK.

As you can see, for instance, this particular P&N forum is full of people who are very (or even extremely) critical to the goverment, who don't believe (sometimes at all) the goverment is saying, and who are willingly participate in any reformation of the goverment. Now, that is hardly a "brainwashed" country. If you label someone that has different idea than you or is willing to accept the goverment says as "brainwashed", then that is the end of arguement. Maybe, they just have seen enoguh information as you have, and decided to believe the government, just like you choose not to (I'm presuming here). Heck, if you really don't like your goverment, you can always participate in the vote and do your best to persuade others to do the same. Well, for worldwide propaganda, if US is so successful at brainwashing, isn't it odd that you can easily find anti-american sentiments in every bit of this world? Basically, what America (or its current government) is doing is "PR" or "advertisement", not brainwashing. You can choose not to believe it, as well as to believe. That's what every single parties and government in democratic societies are doing. Making themselves looking good, so that they can earn the next vote. It is up to YOU to believe it or not.

Quite contrary, in the 50+ years of NK's history, there has been only one party, one person (Kim Il-Sung) and his son (Jung-Il, and now they are talking about his grandson taking over the country again), and people are so completely misinformed and brainwashed, there has not been a single demonstration, a single voice of freedom, and a single opposition to the party or the god-like general (and his family). Well, technically there has been a few, but person who participates in such activities has been either shot in public, chopped his head, hung, sent to labor camps for life time, or just simply disappear. And of course his family would suffer the same fate. This is what is still going on in NK right now very this time, when I'm sitting in front of a monitor and writing this garbage on Anandtech P&N forum. In this country, the way of thinking, what you have to believe, what you have to love and hate are just "pre-determined". If you are an outsider, then you are just dead. Very simple.

Thank god, the country is now losing its grip on its borders and there are many refugees trying to escape to China and come to South Korea (or even US). But it seems, unfortunately, nobody really cares of them, except handful of people.

Please do not compare so called US propaganda with this one. It is not a matter of "degree".

gsaldivar, I would love to. I will try to translate it completely if I find some time to do it. Unfortunately it is very hard to translate. Sometimes there is simply no easy expression in English that can convey the meaning of the speech (or maybe my English skill sucks). You can think it sounds like as if it is from somewhere in Homer's Odyssey or a chapter of Bible prasing God. Of course except that there is that stupid fat dictator's name instead of God. Actually, it is no coincident. It is known that when this Kim Il-Sung was founding NK with his zealots, he actually invented a theory by mixing many biblical ideology as well as communism and traditional Korean values (like patriotism, filial piety, devotion to nation, etc.) to make his own kingdom. They call it "Joo-Che Sa-Sang" or "Independent Ideology" in English. Basically what it says is the people are equal (except him), so that people must follow the leadership of Kim (and his outsprings), obedience to the party, etc. etc. Young kids (even as early as ages of 3-4) start reciting it everyday in their pre-school/school as well as vowing to Kim's family picture (that should be hung in every home) every morning.

Now that's actually how the "brainwashing" is done. And they have been very successful at it.

Two audio segments about NK refugees in China from NPR's All Things Considered:

North Korean Refugees

Humanitarian Crises Looms as N. Korean Nuclear Talks Start

It is just a part of story. The true story inside NK is so hard to come by, it is belived that there is actually a black market in the north part of China about footages from NK (like public execution, carnibalism, and medical/gas experiment on political prisoners). Japanese media and BBC run them sometimes, but they are very rare.

It's actually more than that If you're so worried about others you can send money to a charity. Somehow I doubt you give much of your own money to one though, do you? In any case, if you're starving to death in the US you are a moron. There is simply no excuse for it, and you've only yourself to blame.
