My group is doing a project for English about our hertiage. We chose the subject of wars, since I'm Irish, I chose to do something about Ireland. I know that the Northern province of Ireland is still having land wars with Britain over the land but can't find a real good or informative source about the fued and other details of why it's happening. Anyone know of reasons off the top of their head?

Hasn"t it got something to do with, the N irland is a provice of the UK, however it is phyiscally attachted to island,

Half the population or Catholic, then other half CoE or prostitant. some of the pop wants to be Irish the others to belong to the UK.

IRA (Shin fian (insert correct spelling here) )is for Irish goverment, while the loyalist are for the queen and england.

Most of the UK and Island prob dont give a monkey who N irland belongs to, so why not give them autonmony?

Other things of interest they have marching seasons for some unknown reason (William of Orange), which allways provoks dispuits when one relgion has to walk through another religons area, (which are predominatly segregated, schools included)

you could compare to israel and palastine,

and how people should judge otherpeople on personal merit, and not what race or relgion they belong to.

I dont get why England is still over in northern Ireland. There is nothing really over there for them. WHy the hell are people fighting if they are protestant or catholic? THey are both christian! Its not a problem anymore in the United States. Yeah and we are the uncivilised uncultured country!!!

I think England is about the most oppressive country in history. I mean look Mel Gibson did two movies where he fought the English/British so they must be bad guys!

Back in the days when Ireland was a part of the British Empire they rebelled around 1919. This was straight after ww1 so England were too weak to really bother with putting it down. So a deal was struck that Ireland would gain independence in return for Northern Ireland remaining part of the empire. This was done because the north was still sympathetic to England, and many of its people wanted to remain part of the empire. To this day Northern Ireland is split about staying part of the UK.

Catholics and Protestants fight because Protestants don't recognise the pope. This is because the UK refused to accept the authority of the pope in the 17th century, and some of this influence spread to Ireland. Especially Northern Ireland.

And the IRA are nothing but terrorists. Even the Irish govt sees them as terrorists, so I think it's odd that Americans would support the IRA. Sadly Hollywood portrays these terrorists in a good light (as in Devils Own with Brad Pitt), but in reality they are a bunch of murdering thugs that bomb schools, streets, cafes, the BBC, and they control large chunks of Northern Ireland much like the Mafia used to run New York and Chicago.

I dont get why England is still over in northern Ireland. There is nothing really over there for them. WHy the hell are people fighting if they are protestant or catholic? THey are both christian! Its not a problem anymore in the United States. Yeah and we are the uncivilised uncultured country!!!

They are over in Northern Ireland because it is part of the UK, and these people are British citizens. Most of whom are loyal to Britain. So what do you expect the Brits to do? Pull out and leave their citizens behind? Or remain in Northern Ireland and have Hollywood portray them as oppressive terrorists? It's a no win situation and a big drain on British resources I would imagine.

I imagine it doesn't help things that a large chunk of IRA funding comes from the Boston area.

You have some 500 years of history to catch up on.

You can start by searching:

The Ulster Plantations
The 1641 Massacre
The Battle of the Boyne
The Orange Order
The Easter Rebelion

But that signal box was about to attack their poor children! They had to do so to protect them!
It seems they hope people get so annoyed with them they just give them the land and tell them to piss off.

The problem is pretty complex and has to be viewed in a broader historical context, and I mean not just the last 100 years.
