I guess everyone has their own upgrade options. I will go with any company that offers top of the line performance for the best price. Intel did it for me with the CeleronA 300 which overlocked nicely to 464, and was on par with the yet unreleased P2 450. Amd did it for me with the Athlon500 that overclocked to 700mhz, when the fastest thing out there was 600mhz. AMD did it for me again when I bought a 1.2Ghz chips that over clocked it to 1.4ghz when the 1.3ghz was still coming out. I have enjoyed better than top of the line performance for less than $250 Canadian for me to ever go back. I will always regret paying 600 dollars canadian for a 233mhz, when I found out that the sub $250 166mmx chips were overclocking greater than 233mhz.

In short, I will never buy the fastest processor out. I'll stick to mid range CPU's that are likely to overclock to greater speeds than commercially available. Nothing beats that kind of bragging. I almost made a guy cry, because he paid over $1000 Canadian for a P2 400mhz, when I was running at 464mhz for less than a quarter of the price. O well, to each his own.

Speaking of Lexus, here is Tom's opinion (Tom's Hardware article on the Intel DDR for P4 chipset):

<< Well, we shouldn't forget the good old brand name fetishists. I am not completely free from it either. I will never understand how anyone could even remotely consider driving or even buying a Lexus, this sorry excuse for a wannabe luxury car. >>

And you are absolutely right . . . to each his own. Of course, Tom lives in the land of the cheap Mercedes/BMW and expensive DisLexus.

Huh? Thats what it did, see the benchmarks. Northwood is the fastest desktop processor out there right now.

However, what i want to see is Northwood running on a 133x4 FSB. I cant wait to get the 2.2 and OC the bus to 533Mhz

<< Both of you guys appear to make your decisions based on cost. If something is more expensive, it is better. Although true in many cases, it should not be held as a rule of thumb. >>

Give me a freakin' break! Do you know what I had before my P4 setup?

Athlon-C 1.4GHz w/ SK6 HSF
Abit KG7
1GB of PC2100 Registered ECC memory

It was a great system but I wanted something faster. I also found that a few of the programs I was using looked like they were being optimized for the P4. Well instead of coming on a BBS and bitching and mouning about how programs aren't being optimized for the Athlons, I just bought a P4. Easy fix. AMD guys will ALWAYS find something bad about Intel. Since they can't brag anymore how they have the fastest CPU, they have to revert back to the old price/performance arguement. If Intel released a 5GHz CPU that absolutely slapped around ANYTHING AMD had to offer but sold for $1000, the AMD gang would be arguing that $1000 is too much money for a CPU and AMD offers pretty good performance at a good cost. Well whoop-ta-de-do! I just want the fastest processor and they want the cheapest. We have different agendas.

Well it's definetely not why I started this thread. However the chances were pretty grim that it would turn into a Intel vs AMD flamewar. It's too bad that it did.

Nice. What P4 did you spring for? Just in case you didn't know, Anandtech already crowned the XP 1900+ as the fastest CPU so your argument there is a little weak when compared to the 2.0Ghz. Not that your P4 is slow...far from it. It's no slouch by any means. The XP 1900+ only costs $290 retail and is fully compatible with the KG7 though.

Is it time for a new forum?

Yeah, we'll just call that one, "The Inferno" with the caption, "Please disable your user rating or it will be destroyed..."

In a side note, supposedly AMD is already sampling Hammer, the performance may be as much as twice that of the XP!

What . . . that the Athlon is no longer the performance champion!?

What is so hard to grasp about that?

Re-read the benchmarks . . . it's pretty clear - in black & white.

Just for the record, I like Coke and not Pepsi.

But RC Cola has the BEST Price/Performance. And it overclocks well too.

Sorry man, I was fast forwarding to January when the Northwood would be launched. So you are right...for now.

Oh and I got a P4 1.9GHz running at 2.0GHz...for now.

Bah, maybe if you use high end ice cooling. Straight outta the fridge it can't compete.

HELLO, do you have a few marbles rolling around up there? The Athlon XP 1900+ STILL is the fastest desktop processor on the market. The Northwood is STILL another month away and isn't "officially" available for sale as it is still under NDA (hence no reviews except for the lone, rogue French site). Saying that the Athlon no longer holds the crown is like saying that the i845E has taken the Intel DDR performance crown away from the i845D.

What would be even funnier is if AMD released a Athlon XP 2000+ a day before the Northwood that was EXACTLY as fast or faster than the 2.2GHz Northwood while still costing $300 less

In Stock

GoogleGear, 4.0/7.0 on Resellerratings. I think I'll pass

On second thought, I should have said "officially released" and released from NDA, which it hasn't been. And there are still no listings at all for the chip on Pricewatch. Find me another reputable site that has the processor. GoogleGear, who lists on pricewatch, doesn't even have the chip up on that site.

A similar search on MySimon turns up only Computers4Sure and they don't have it in stock. If this chip were so hot, GoogleGear would be OUT as well, especially with their lower price compared to Computers4Sure ($718).

I've bought a lot of stuff from Googlegear. They have very good CPU prices. You can often get box retail for what others charge for OEM. They are a bit slow in shipping, but otherwise no problems at all.

You still seem to have some problems accepting the benchmarks. The Northwood IS available and in stock.

HaHAhaHa It would be funny. But that is a big IF. CURRENTLY, the Northwood is NOW the performance desktop king!

EDIT:

<< I admit that I chose the wrong wording choice, thats all >>

Well, howz it sound reworded? That part about the loose marbles was not at all polite. That part about the 1900 "still" being the fastest processor was incorrect.

"Officially" No
"Technically" Yes

I would have reworded it to say that the Northwood is not officially announced by Intel or available in large quantities.

And I didn't mean it as being mean or nasty. Rarely do I ever dish out the fury. The only person that I would actually throw fire at was Hardware

(between me and apoppin)
Now if I had said that I'd throw your notebook off a clip, make a video of it, then play it back on my iPAQ to show you as you watch in horror; THAT would be mean
