i have a copy of norton antivirus 2004. it had a retail box and everything but one thing i noticied is that auto protect doesnt seem to function properly. Now i know auto protect is suppose to monitor you computer and scan whatever files you open but it doesnt seem to doing that. for example, i downloaded a zip file and it didn't scan it. i don't see no visual alerts informing me that auto protect is scanning the file.
now im not quite sure is this just how norton 2004 behaves or is it that i have a fake, or in some way defective copy. if you own a copy of 2004 norton av, how does your auto protect behave? thanks.

When you hold your mouse over the icon in the taskbar, it's suppose to say "Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect Enabled". Like you said, it's suppose to automatically check downloaded files, and check email, etc automatically. If it's enabled and it still doesn't work, try a re-install. Mine works fine.

well im still not quite sure is it me or it isnt function properly. anyone who owns norton antivirus 2004 edition, can you tell me what it looks like when auto-protect is performing a scan? Perhaps its doing everything in the background and im not knowing about it?

Mine pops a little window up right above the System Tray and says Scanning XX Message or File or something like that. It is most noticeable with email for me...it scans outgoing and incoming messages and even caught another Mydoom message last night before I even saw it appear in the Inbox. When I'm installing software sometimes it will post a message that the system is waiting on a NAV scan of a file, especially if it is a large file.

Maybe there is a check-box somewhere to enable those pop-up messages. I haven't messed with mine beyond running a full scan after I built my system a couple weeks ago and running the virus definition updates. You might just go dig through all the menus and sub-menus to see where the settings are.

Just like you said, there should be a little windows right above the system tray stating what file its scanning. But when you download small files like 10-15 mb do you still see the window? Is there times when you download and you don't see the window? Thanks.

I also have 04 and while it does show a msg scanning for incoming and outgoing mail, I do not get a pop up box in regards to it scanning files I recently downloaded such as: .zip files, .rar files, etc. I know for a fact 2003 would pop up a box as soon as it was done downloading and scan it for viruses.

I have NIS 2004, which of course has NAV 2004. For large files I see the popup that it is scanning files. I also seem to notice that it will pop up when decompressing compressed files (.zip, .rar) only if the files in the archive are large enough or there are a lot of them. otherwise the popup would be too fast for a small file.

Generally you won't see any alert unless the operation may take some time (e.g. big zip files) or a virus is found. You can test it yourself by using the Eicar test string (google for it, you'll find plenty of examples)

that was exactly the answer i was looking for. Just today, i installed my call of duty game and when i placed the cd in and installed, i finally saw the auto protect window pop up scanning some .cab files occasionly. I also tried the eicar test string and before i even downloaded the file, auto protect stopped me and deleted the file.
i originally questioned the integrity of my program because i remember for sure that in previous versions of norton (ie 2002) the auto protect would notify you of every scan, not just big, time consuming ones like 2004 does. like always, thanks to all of you for your help.

ok my thoughts that i had a defective version of norton 2004 were gone for a while but now it comes up again.

i know auto protect is suppose to scan your downloads and everything that you open. but just now i detected a virus auto protect didnt detect.
the file is here .adobe cs v.8 fix ok so i downloaded the file. no notification of a auto protect scan. weird. ok so i ran a manual scan just to make sure. To my supriuse, it detected a adware virus called adware.purity in the file pscan.exe. just to test out my av i even extracted my file to d drive. and auto protect still said nothing. nothing popped up informing me that the file was infected. But why when i ran a manual scan it detects it? this is the thing that is killing me. i want to believe my av is fine but stuff like this is realy bugging me. i starting to suspect stuff like whether i have a beta or the final build.

for anyone who is brave enough, can someone download the file and see what your results are. (ignore the prompts to install a plugin and click on the download adobe fix link)see if your auto protect detects it when you download it, extract it, etc. make sure you have norton 2004 antivirus as that is what i am running. you won't be infected by the virus as long as you don't run the pscan.exe file. im not trying to infect your computer with a virus or something. i just really need someone to test this out. thanks

Since any realtime scanning component adds overhead, autoprotect only scans for viral/worm type content. The on demand scanner scans for both viral/worm content as well as the spyware/adware definitions. This is why your not seeing any alerts from AP for this.

Bill
