Norton Antivirus 2005 is terrible!

Norton Antivirus 2005 is terrible! I had to re-install it twice. The third re-install caused me to also reformat. Ever since my computer has been without Norton it is running like a charm. Also keep in mind that Norton recognizes all these issues I was having on there support site.

I just need an antivirus program that is going to work well and without all the conflicts. I don't mind system resource hogs as my computer is very fast and can pimp slap any antivirus trying to bog it down.
What do you reccomend?

If you're gonna spend money, you may want to try out trend micro's stuff. they're top-notch, just not as recognizable in the consumer market as symantec and mcafee. i use mcafee virusscan enterprise 8.0, because my school gives it out for free. no complaints and definitely a much less painful install than norton software.

Avast!, AVG, AntiVir (AVG and Avast! are easier to use).
Avoid McAfee. I hear and read nothing but crap about their newer stuff, and I had terrible experiences with their old crap. They have some odd views on malware, too, which is not good for a AV company.
Norton is good in a corporate environment, but can sometimes be a PITA for normal home use.

This is such a true statement. In a moment of poor judgement last year, I bought the McAfee Internet Security Suite. It took several tries for it to install cleanly, and update itself (its pop up blocker blocks its own attempts to update the software!) but it caused so much trouble I had to remove it. It caused havoc with my local applications (particularly any game that ever wanted to access the internet) and it caused total crashes everytime I tried to access a shared drive on another PC on my LAN. It's a steaming pile of crap that should be avoided, particuarly when it lightens your wallet by 60 bucks or so.

I use AVG and Zone Alarm and Firefox, and have therefore obtained all the features of McAfee for free, and with much greater stability.
