norton antivirus/internet security

Hi there i got me a new sony vaio notebook computer and it comes with norton anti virus and internet security pre installed but not activated should i use nortons? or my usual avg antivirus software and other free programs that work just as well?

Norton Antivirus 2005 has a significantly better detection rate than any free antivirus, according to the tests I've seen at places like http://www.av-comparatives.org.

BTW if you want to get the most out of it, go through the configuration and ensure that the heuristic detection is enabled and maxed, and that it is scanning within compressed files on the real-time scanner as well as the scheduled scans. It can detect adware/spyware and other non-viral Bad Stuff too, so enable those options if you want extra protection there.

You can get daily Intelligent Updater updates from this page to stay more up-to-date than the default weekly auto-updates, and at the rate viruses come out these days, that might be a good habit

The latter is the better option IMHO. Symantec AV & IS are extrememly bloated products.

Slap on AntiVir and Kerio Personal Firewall V215 both are free and use very little system resources even with real time protection enabled. Antivir has the best detection rate of any free antivirus that i have seen, in the tests that is.

I think it might be a six month trial or a 90 day trial. I would recommend using ONLY NAV and not go with the rest of their suite packages just because it does hog a lot of system resources. Even with just NAV on my system it kinda bogs my system down. Not completely or to the point where it bothers me but during start up you can notice it being a lot slower than when NAV was not installed.
