Norton Antivirus under Win2k

does anyone know how much norton antivirus slows down windows 2000? the copy i got with my machine is telling me that the usage agreement is going to expire and i am just curious if it is worth purchasing...

I've used both Innoculate IT and Norton and I gotta admit that Innoculate kicks butt! It's free and they update definitions very often. Plus it doesn't take up too many resources.

I would not use Norton. At my school we run Norton with constant monitoring and there is a very significant speed difference.

We actually use norton for our antivirus solution at work... very easy to manage, good features and it doesn't slow down your system. In fact there is an option to specify CPU utilization during virus scan.

It doesn't slow anything down. I have run it on both a P3 500 and an Athlon 950 under Win2k Pro and Advanced Server on the P3 500, and it doesn't slow anything down really. The only time I disable it is when I play games because I'm sure I'll get another 1/1000th of a performance increase.

No slow down here. I am running Norton Corporate version 7.3. I have it on a laptop and desktop, no difference.

Use Inocukate... Norton 2000 will slow down your system.. i like inoculate better...(cant beat it for free)

disable all of Norton's annoying background monitoring and it should be fine.

I *think* the only task for NAV is rtvscan.exe which is currently using 8MB and has taken 2 seconds of CPU time and my PC has been on for 90+ minutes.

OK, there *may* be three related tasks with "vp" in the filenames. They use a sum of 13MB and 0 seconds of CPU time.

Disable background monitoring, and only do a full system scan weekly or so. That way it's not taking up any processor time.

Depends on how much ram you have too, but disable monitoring and scan weekly.
