Just curious;

I see a lot of people complaining about having to reinstall Windows etc. Why don't you just use Ghost? It'll take you all of 5 min to get your computer up and running. I used to whine and moan and complain whenever I screwed up and had to reinstall. Now, pfff, reinstalling is actually fun. I ghosted Windows with Office and a few basic programs installed (powerarchiver, partition magic, all the windows updates,etc.). So whenever I load the ghost image, I'm back with a freshly-installed OS with all the necessary features.

It's a godsend when you're in a rush for work, school or something, and don't have 3 hours to spend reinstalling and downloading updates.

I'm just suprised that everyone is NOT using this.

Not sure. Perhaps because many think it's this unfriendly DOS-based program that forces you to deal with volumes and partitions? That's what I got when I used Ghost to back up my HDD. Don't get me wrong, it was worth the trouble later on when the drive died.

Yep, did my usual Ghost backup of my primary OS paritition before upgrading to WinXP SP2, just in case. So far so good as two of my machines have flawlessly installed SP2 without any hiccups.

Ghost is actually very easy to use, even if you use the boot-disk.

And if you install Ghost as a Windows APP, it's a breeze. You can do all the steps within Windows.

only problem I have with Ghost is I do not have my windows partition on the C:\ drive so windows can never find the license. I end up repairing the windows instalation and fighting windows over activation every time

I imaged my main drive with Ghost right before I installed XP SP2. Thank God as SP2 trashed my system. Just rebooted with the Ghost floppy and my system was back to perfection in an unattended 20 minutes.

Agreed - I would not install anything without having a current Ghost image of my RAID drive to go back too if there is a problem. Takes minutes to save you hours of work.

nah its a peice of piss now to do the basics, it more or less detects everything in windows and you just select which drives/partitions to ghost and leave it to get on with it. I've never actually had to restore with it yet mind you, but nice to know there's a total backup with all my tweaks and everything just there.

Anyone know if Ghost is restricted for use on one machine only (perhaps by registration)?

I thought I read V9 is restricted to one activation on a single PC.

Still use Ghost 2002 here. The price was right ($18), works on a floppy, pretty much bug free. Too bad I'll be forced to upgrade soon as larger HDs will eventually be too big for this version (works on 120 GB drives...not sure of actual limit).

I use a single copy of Ghost 2003 on more than one machine. I have three or four earlier ver. and have used them on more than one machine also.
