I get this message when I am only browsing the net. Nothing else is running. I have 512mb of ram so it can't be talking about that so what other memory is it saying I don't have enough of and how do I fix it?

Thanks, Wendy

Unfortunately, it is talking about your RAM - which means there's some kind of problem with the browser or OS not recognizing your memory, or maybe a runaway process in the background. To start with, what's the OS and browser, and are you running any background processes (anti-virus, etc.) or services that you're aware of?

Sorry for not replying sooner. Busy weekend. I have Win98se and mostly use Netscape unless a page needs Explorer. It makes me close the browsers, then if I check available ram using system monitor and it usually says 390mb available. Closing 8-10 browsers shouldn't need 390mb of ram and why wouldn't it just create a swap file then? Icq is the only other thing running when it says I have not enough memory, according to Ctrl-Alt-Del. I have the same browser versions installed on another computer and it doesn't do this.

I have the p4t533-C with 2.53 cpu, 128mb AIW, 512mb ram, modem and plextor burner installed if that helps. The computer is about 3 months old. I have also used a virus program to check several times but it is not running all the time, only when I open it.

So how do I find out what is using my memory in the background or where the memory leak is?

Thanks, Wendy

Please don't use two accounts. That's not really accepted here, and the Moderators will lock one (or both if they've not had their coffee this morning ) of them.

Now, on to your problem... The reason you run out of memory with Windows 98 SE is that you actually run out of GDI and USER heap space. This FAQ explains it in a more technical way, if you prefer. The only way to escape this problem is to totally clean up all your startup items (leave nothing running that's not absolutely essential), and only run smaller programs - one at a time. If you prefer more flexibility and stability, you should upgrade to Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP, as both of those do not have the resource space limitations of Windows 98.

There is nothing in startup except scanreg and system tray. When it starts giving me the error message, there is only explorer, icq, rnaap, systray and netscape running.

It does not do this with our older computer so why is it doing it with this one? The parts are different but all the settings are the same. This is what I don't understand.

Thanks, Wendy

PS: One account is my husbands. I didn't realize he was logged on. I hope the moderators can see that there is no malice going on here with only 38 posts in 2 years.

Hmm, sounds like a resource leak. Try not using ICQ and see if that helps any.

P.S. I think the moderators will understand about the account issue. There shouldn't be any problems, seeing that it was unintentional.
