hey,

I just assembled my first system, ASUS P5W, E6400 etc.

Since this is my first build I pretty much followed the manuls (thank god the ASUS has a decent manual).

so everything in my system is connected and it just wont power up!! My PSU is the 700W OCZ GameXStream.

When I power the system there is no beep no lights on the motherboard, just dead silence.

what should I do? Maybe I forgot something, something most noobs forget?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Do not be offended by this question, but is the power switch on the back of the power supply in the ON position? If so, did you make sure to connect BOTH the 20+4 pin connector (to the right of the memory slots) AND the 4 pin connector (just above the CPU socket)?

Push the power button. Clearly you didn't connect the case to mobo jumper correctly.

the 20+4 power cable is connected properly. Also the 'Cpu 1' 4 pin cable is connected close to the processor.

Question: The arrow mark on connectors corresponds to ground? 1st pin?

I'm pretty sure I connected the power switch to the mobo properly, is there a way to switch on the system from the motherboard, just to be sure?

Thanks

Yes, get a pen (with a metal tip only) or a screwdriver or other such device, and locate the pins on the mainboard that are intended to be connected to the power switch, and bridge them with the tip of your object. If everything is installed correctly, and not DOA, this should cause the system to power on. Been awhile since I've needed to use this trick, but I think the system will remain powered on until you short the contacts again.

My case had two power switches, I tried both of them, none of them worked.

Is there a way to test the power supply?

Any more advice, I'm really stumped!!

Thanks a million

Try powering on with the mobo setup outside of the case. If everything works, you'll know that the mobo wasn't properly ground inside the case.

Make sure that you put the anti-static bag that the mobo came in underneath it first.

You need to test your power supply. It sounds like you're not getting any power to your mobo. When you connect the 20+4 pin and the other 4 pin connector, you should see a light on the mobo telling you have power to the board. Also, make sure that your PSU is on. If it is, you may have a bad PSU or a bad mobo.

ok, finally I got it to work. Dunno what happened - went to bed and re did all the cabling just now and it worked fine.

Another issue has come up though - When I run the initial set up, none of my drives were detected (my primary master DVD Drive and primary slave DVD Drive.

Then it says bad checksum so I enter the BIOS.

I was looking through the BIOS and noted that my CPU Temps were 92 C!!! Yes 92 C not F.
What should I do??

Thanks

None of my DVD Drives are being detected as Primary master and priomary slave devices,

and my CPU temps are reading 92 C <- yes C in the BIOS!!! WHat should I do?

re: drives
Which IDE port did you use for your optical drives? You SHOULD be using the blue IDE port. The black port is on the JMicron controller and does not support ATAPI (ROM) drives.

re: CPU temp
Eithr that reading is garbage, or your heatsink is not making good contact with your CPU heatspreader.

yup, I'm using the blue IDE port - already made the other mistake some time back

I checked the air coming out the back of my PC and its pretty cool, so I'm not too sure abt the temps either!!

Ok I reseated the heatsink to the processor and I double checked all the connections -
Now my idle CPU temp is around 58-60C (and its steadily increasing like a degree every 5 minutes!!! what should I do? Get another fan and heatsink?
Also my motherboard temps are around 44C is that ok?

How do make my drives, primary vs secondary vs Third ....? Its detecting one of my DVD drives as Primary Slave, and my other DVD drive and HD as secondary slave and Third slave. I need some of them as masters right?

Any info would be helpful

Flash to BIOS 1305:
http://p5wdh.de/downloads/asus/bios/p5wdh1305.zip

If you don't have windows installed, EzFlash may be the quickest way for your to flash. See the manual. Basically, you rename the ROM according to the instructions, place it on a floppy. Reboot. At post hit ALT-F2 to invoke the EzFlash app.

If the problems persist: make sure your drive jumpers are properly set the master and slave? If they are, try booting with just the master DVD drive connected.

That temp issue would really bother me. Do whatever you need to, to ensure that the HSF is making good contact with the CPU. If you can easily move the HSF it's properly locked-down.

58C is better, but still high. The stock cooler should do a better job, but a good aftermarket cooler with artic silver 5 is always a good idea, imo.

If you did not alter the bios IDE settings, and your DVD drives are correctly jumpered, the DVD drives will be the Primary IDE Master and Primary IDE Slave. If your boot HD is a SATA drive connected to SATA1 (red SATA port) it will be Third IDE Master.

What thermal compound are you using? How much are you using? Are you spreading the compound over the IHS? or putting some in the center and letting the HSF spread it during installation? When you removed the HSF, was the compound evenly spread across the CPU? or was it localized to one section of the IHS? I think you have a serious heat problem. The HD problems can be addressed AFTER you fix the heat -or- satisfy yourself that the temp sensor is lying.

I didn't buy any compound or anything, I'm using the stuff that came in the retail processor.

The compound isn't evenly spread, its concentrated in the centre of the CPU.

Should I buy some thermal paste? Which one would you recommend? Arctic Silver?

I was also considering getting the Scythe SCINF, coz i want to keep the proc as cool as possible and probably mildly overclock it to 2.4-2.6Ghz. Is it a worth while investment?

Thanks

Yes, absolutely. The stock cooler is such a pita to work with, and doesn't do a great job. A good aftermarket cooler w/ Artic Silver 5 is a much better cooling solution.

Did you manage to get your drive issues sorted-out?

made a quick decision, coz I need the system running ASAP!!

Thanks a lot phil!!

I have the same cooler. It does a good job, and does it relatively quietly. The LED version is quite sexy, to boot.

Glad you're up and running. Nothing more frustrating than a $1500 power consuming paper-weight.
