Is it really missing or just not opening? Check and see. I was having the same problem and i opened the folder only to find that notepad.exe was now notpad.exe which turned out to be a trojan.
If so, you'll need to delete notepad.exe then rename notpad.exe back to notepad.exe.
Try doing a search for notepad.exe. Normally it is found in the c:\windows folder. I've seen this happen a number of times and usually the file is still there, but the association to it was broken
Perhaps this is god's way of telling you that you should switch to a different, superior program? How about jEdit or SciTE from the open-source brigate, or TextPad or UltraEdit from the shareware side?
The thing with this particular Trojan/Hijacker is it will not let you
RENAME or REPLACE the file while they still exist. You must DELETE
every occurance (renamed or not) then replace.
