Nothing goes perfectly...

I got all the parts for my new build and put everything together. All goes well, power it on, fans spin, everything lights up and... no video. Thought the card might not be in properly, removed card, checked all connections, plugged it back in, still no video. The fan on the card is running, but nothing will display, when I unplug the DVI cable and plug it back in all it says is no signal. Not even a BIOS screen. I do have my old drive with all the drivers from the old machine on it. I was planning on throwing the Windows disk in there and reformatting once I got it all together. I do have a fresh, unused drive if need be, but it's a pain in the ass to get in. Any ideas what the problem could be?

Do a minimal install outside the box. Just the CPU, GPU and, one stick of ram, no HDD or optical drive. Make sure the one stick of ram is in the correct slot for that configuration. Check all case connectors for the proper orientation to pin one. Look for the embossed triangle on each plug and do not trust the cable labels to indicate correct orientation.

Shot in the dark....No pun intended

Does your video card require 6 pin or 8 pin auxilary power and if so did you plug them in.

Yes, the pin for the GPU is plugged in. The fan on it is spinning fine, there's just no video. I've double checked each cable, the only one I'm missing is the ATX12V four pin connector. I just have a 24 pin power connector. My PSU is an older model (about two or three years) and does not come with a 4 pin ATX12V connector. That couldn't be the problem, could it?

The four pin 12V connector is for older PSU's that have 20 pin connectors if I'm reading between the lines correctly in answer to your question. It would help if you listed your specs. Did you try outside the box with one stick of ram as I suggested?

I don't think that's correct. I thought the 4-pin was needed as dedicated power to the cpu? Out of interest is there an 8-pin module you can split off?

I have an Asus M4A79XTD Evo mobo, AMD Phenom II x4 proccessor, 4 gig of OCZ ram, XFX Radeon HD 5770 GPU.
Tried booting with nothing but one Ram stick, GPU, PSU and CPU, still no video.

Perhaps I'm reading this wrong...

You are missing the 4 pin plug that supplys power to the CPU, its the one off by its self, generally along the upper left corner? If so, that's a problem. I've had the same issue when I forgot to plug that in. I've got 5 year old cheap ps that has the 4 pin for the CPU and a 20+4 for the motherboard.

I don't have an additional 4 pin connector. The only 4 pin I have is a 20+4 pin. The CPU fan is plugged in to a three pin connector. If that missing 4-pin connector is the problem, is there a way to splice one in on a molex connector or something?

I'm 99% sure thats the problem. Power from a molex fitting is way too much juice. What power supply do you have? Chances are you'll need a new power supply.

You have to have that 4 pin you will need to buy a new psu or you can get adapters that will go from molex to the 4 pin. that's the 12volt to your cpu.

What are you talking about 12 volt rail would be the same either way.
Now yes if you have a older single rail psu it can be bad to run everything off one but just depends on the psu.

I suggest you guys go over to the psu forums and read some of the stickies.

The PSU is in Enermax 535W PSU. I no longer have the box, it was stolen when the storage shed I had it in was broken into. I'll check for that again, if not I'll be buying a new PSU sooner than I thought I guess.

That psu should be fine just find a adapter if you can. You didn't put the spec of your new machine but you don't sound like you have some huge crossfire setup or anything so 500 watt will be great.

Sorry, I wasn't understanding which 4 pin you meant. If you look at page 2-2 of your manual, you'll see that the 4 pin ATX is necessary along with the 24 pin.

I see on the Enermax site that your PSU comes with a 8 pin CPU power connection. I don't know if there is some sort of adapter or not.

The 8-pin CPU power is just 2 x 4-pin CPU power. (many of them split) Regardless, you should be able to plug in 4-pins and have 4-pins hang over the edge.

Edit: Not going to happen. LOL (from below)

Oops, here's the specs on my new machine:
Asus M4A79XTD EVO
AMD Phenom II x4 955
4 gigs OCZ ram
XFX Radeon HD 5770
Maxtor 250 gig HD
Memorex DVD burner

Not a big system yet. In may, I'm upgrading to a 1tb hd (yay for birthdays) and sometime within the next year I'm getting either a Radeon 5970 or 5870. Then I'll be getting a 750w Therematake PSU. Looks like I may be getting it sooner rather than later, though. -_-;;

Yup your PSU should've come with an adapter if you can find the box, here is a pic of it:

Yeah, I tried already. Not gonna work without ripping out plastic. *sighs* And the only things I can find online are 8-pin male to 4 pin female. I need 8-pin female to 4-pin male otherwise I'm gonna have to daisy chain three different adapters to get what I need. I'm going to check tomorrow, but I think my powersupply box was one of the things stolen when my family's storage shed was broken into. If it's not there, I'm going to call my parts supplier at work and see if maybe they can order me one. No shipping then at least.

If you plan on replacing the PSU, why not cut the 8 pin adapter? Perhaps find a dead PSU that has the 4 pin adapter, remove the plastic part and remove 4 of the wires from your 8 pin and its good to go.

Also, the adapter Schmide linked looks like it should work just fine.

You do have to bend one of the plastic things but it would work. The OKGEAR at newegg looks even less obtrusive.
