NT4 Backup Server Setup?

Unfortunately I know just enough to get myself in trouble :Q

I'm setting up a backup domain server (eventualy to be promoted to primary),on my companies network, and I can't get it to find and log-on to the domain during setup.

I did add it to the Primary Server (computer name and set as a backup). I even rebooted everything to see if something would refresh.

I'm lost at this point?? Sorry if this is too wide of a problem to diagnose, but any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

That is usually a networking issue - bad cable, not installing the right drivers, choosing an incorrect IP address, having your default route incorrect, etc. Also it could be that the username/password you are using is invalid when you try to join the domain or the account you are using doesn't have proper rights.

When you get to the point of joining the domain, your machine should be on the network. Can the old server ping the new server by address?

Are the PDC and BDC on the same subnet? If not, you need some means of name resolution (WINS or LMHOSTS file) so that the BDC can find the PDC across the router.

Are you sure that you made the server on install a backup domain controller? If you still are seeing the local computer name in the logon, then you have not made it a bdc.

I'm pretty sure it's on the same subnet mask (255.255.255.0)
Nope, cant' ping the ip (set to 10.10.10.20)
I am using the administrator account and pswd.
I did choose "Backup Domain Controller". I gave the computer the name "GATEWAY6400" ...yes we got in on that deal

I'm still in the initial setup screens. The exact wording of the error is " The Domain Controller for this Domain cannot be located".

Thanks for the input so far. Anything else? or should I go buy Networks for Dummies?
