The Pentagon has drafted a revised doctrine for the use of nuclear weapons that envisions commanders requesting presidential approval to use them to preempt an attack by a nation or a terrorist group using weapons of mass destruction. The draft also includes the option of using nuclear arms to destroy known enemy stockpiles of nuclear, biological or chemical weapons.

We may have covered this already, but it's a little too convenient for my taste. Doesn't leave any evidence, either, one way or the other.

So I guess we'd have to take their word for it that those smoking radioactive craters were created for our own good..

Damn, just imagine if such a policy had been in place for the Iraqi invasion...

Yeah but I think we have many more nukes then china. They only have like 50 while we have like 6,000. We can finish them. They will just hurt our major cities on the west coast.

Not to be cavalier, but not likely that many of them would make it to the United States, and fewer still would hit their targets. Nuclear showdown with the U.S. is sheer stupidity for ANY nation(s). That is one of the reasons that the United States is the only Superpower.

I agree with this policy. There may be an instance where it is necessary and I would want the procedure spelled out in advance.
That said I also want a President with enough brains to know when to use this option. So I propose delaying its implementation til 2009.

It would also be nice to have some type of ICBM defense system in place and have a preemption policy. You know any use of our nukes will result in other nations firing their handful of nukes back at us.

Pre Emptive nuclear strikes sound like bad news to me. You can't sign a bill giving generals free reign to poop nukes whenever/wherever they want which is essentially what this does. A nuclear strike would destroy any and all evidence of what we were pre empting which seems like a dangerous balancing act. Just not worth it. We need a good missile defense system, and we need to keep our detterant threat real. If someone launches a missile at us we can have their country wiped off the planet in 45 mins or less. That alone is enough of a deterrant to keep countries from launching an attack on us.

Or 90 Aircraft carriers patroling the high seas. That would be a big deterrant. Or a 1 million man regular army + a few more million in reserves. That will keep people from doing stuff againts the US.

the way I read the article is that the military doesn't get the right to use nukes pre-emptorily. It just gives commanders a channel to request their use thru the NCA (national command authority, ie. the president).
And as to missile defense, what country would be stupid enought to actually launch a nuke at us when we would wipe them out? The real threat is the nuke coming thru our porous borders delivered at a fraction of the cost and with no certainty who sent it.

Korea, China(They have decleared nuclear war on us a few weeks ago) Iran or any middle eastern nation with a crazy dictator.
