NV Silencer Problems?

So I installed this the other day using Artic silver 5. Temps went from 38C idle to 63-68C idle, haven't tried it under load for good reason. Any idea's what the hell might be the problem? Is the fan supposed to push air with the back side of the "scoops"? Seemed kinda inefficient to me but what do I know. I've tightened the screws down as far as I dare since the studs are pretty small and I don't want to break one. Any idea's? Pretty sad I only hit 62C under load with my stock setup.

Mine is 65C at idle right now. I'm using the same cooler. But hardly ever goes over 80C under load which is still in spec.

You must have installed it wrong somehow. Did you put on a TIM (arctic silver)? Did you tighten each side the same amount?

Yes, it pushes air with the back of the scoops.
You don't have to tighten the screws too much. It is enough to tighten them by hand.

Remove it and inspect the GPU and the heat sink. Is Arctic Silver spread everywhere? You can tell if there is a good contact between the chip and the heat sink.

If you are not sure, you can clean both the chip and the heat sink and then put a very small amount of Arctic Silver on the center of the GPU and install again. Just tighten the screws with your hands. Then remove the screws and remove the cooler and inspect again.

If the sink does not make good contact, you have to find out why.

Did you by chance install the 71.84 drivers? They have a temp bug. I'm not sure if it's reporting incorrect temps, or if it's getting stuck in 3D mode as people have suggested. Either way... setting the core clock speed of my 6800GT to 402 MHz fixes it.

I've not installed the new drivers yet which I need to, but considering the stock sink kept it cooler than the NV seems strange.

Navid thanks for the advice, I am using AS5, but I didn't spread it on very thick, evenly, but not thick. Same type of coating as for my chipset, should it be thicker for the GPU? I will try your suggestion and see what sort of contact I'm getting.

Its not the drivers. The same thing happened to me when i tried to install mine. Aparently on my version of the card, the Ram sits higher so the copper base plate dosen't get good contact with the GPU. Im running a 6800GTO (got it from Dell for cheap). Cold air comes from the fan so it has to be a contact issue.

I haven't done this but you can sand down the copper plate where it touches the ram. Mine is still sitting in its box, i gave up on it.

PCains: Interesting. I am looking to get one for my Dell GTO as well. Did you get a Rev 2 of the Silencer? I wonder if you could pile some thermal tape on the GPU to "build it up"?

Does anyone think it's a little weird that his old idle temps are 38C? That seems a little low to me. Maybe the problem isn't the new temps but the old temps......

I think it's a contact issue...then again, i think the new driver and slight OC might help too.
