<< Quite interesting unofficial information about the prices on NV20. According to Clubic, the price on NV20 cards is going to be from $630 to $700. It is a lot money, by the way. Generally speaking, sometime ago there was information about $500 for an accelerator. So where is the truth? From my point of view, both sources are correct - $500 is a price for 64 Mb version and $630-700 is for the 128 Mb model. >>



Gunna start saving a little more. Take up busking on a weekend maybe! In fact, got a good kidney here if anyone wants one.

500 bucks for an NV20 64 mb version is not very steep at all since the Ultra came out at the price around. I am going to be one of the first in line for an NV20 and I am just a poor school kid with a job that pays just above minimum wage.

Given price drops in memory (including ddr) of late, I doubt the difference between the 64 and 128 MB version would be that much.

btw, anything > $350-$400 for a consumer level video board is disgusting.

Hey there fella, the Ultra was the top-notch. This is the semi-top notch, with the 128MB version being top notch. Compare it to the GTS Pro and Ultra. How much did the Pro cost, eh? Not $500. Looks the word idiot was turned around again.

All I did was point out to him that Geforce 2 Ultras (atleast the Prophet II Ultra 64) were priced at 500+ when it first came out.

Seems like a REALLY dumb move to me, unless the bragging rights mean that much to you.

I think the NV20 will come WAY down in price after about three months. Meanwhile, most of the advantages of the card won't kick in until games are specifically written for it. It's greatest claim to fame is hardware support for avoiding rendering the hidden surfaces of objects, which happens now and uselessly soaks up to 40% of the video card's power. But until software writes for it, that does nothing.

X-Box software will write for this. It may well be in the Direct X 8 specs.
Consider this. The X-Box will essentially have an NV20 inside it. The X Box is supposed to sell all in for between $350 and $400. OK, MS is supposed to loose something on the hardware, to make back up on game licensing. But it can't be more than $100 or something they'll loose per box. That comes with a PIII 733, DVD, 6-10 gig hard drive, power supply, controllers, enclosure and cables. Which means that the NV20 plus the DDR inside the box can't come to more than say $250 in cost. AT the most. Maybe quite a bit less, once its ramping in production. NV20 cards should cost nvidia similar to make.

But of course nvidia will soak early adopters for all it can. While meanwhile games not written for it won't show that much difference over a GF2 GTS or Radeon.

It will be vastly smarter to wait three, or even more like five months, until around Xmas time this year, to buy the nv20.

dude, if you want performance, for $630-700... here's a better alternative.

get a dual CPU motherboard.
Dump in a dual P3-1ghz
keep your old videocard. or upgrade to radeon cuz they're very fairly priced now!
[beware of ATi driver support though, its really sketchy]

AND POOF!! INSTANT PERFORMANCE over and above what the NV20 will give you!

Uh huh....I know you did...that's why I said that....and the point of what I said is that the Ultra was the highest and best, so it was almost okay to cost that much, while this one is not the highest and best. How you didn't get that out of my post, I don't know...maybe you didn't really read it?

You know, if this card has 128MB of 250Mhz DDR memory, that would probably cost $200-$300 right there. That stuff is not cheap! This stuff is quicker than the SRAM that was in the Athlon Classic 700! That was only 512Kbytes, and I belive it cost about $30. Of course that is SRAM, not DRAM. The NV20 is going to be extremely expensive to make! Until memory prices plummet, the cards will keep getting more expensive. I am in no way advocating getting one however, I'm just fine with my Radeon DDR AIW!

What's gonna happen is the nv20 will come out first in a 64meg DDR version. That will sell for what, $500 at first. Some will buy at that.

THen in a month it will start coming down a bit in price.

Then in about 3-4 months they will release a 128meg DDR version. That one will sell at first for $500, maybe $550 even. At the same time the 64 meg version will go down to $300, and then $250.

Then they will release faster versions of both the 64 and the 128 meg versions. With the top price still at $500-$550.

By then the 64 meg version will be down to 200. And maybe the faster version will be $250 or so.

It's probably about then, about Xmas time, that I will buy the faster version of the 64 meg card. When there will be games really supporting it. More than one or two.

What you all think of my crystal ball?

It seems like that is the only the only way Nvidia knows to go. They always seem to get the faster memory for there video cards to get more bandwidth while companies like ATi and GP go with a software solution in order to maintain and receive faster FPS while containing image quality. I wonder what the bottleneck speed of the NV20 will be this time, probably 1.5ghz.
