NV5r3 works perfectly on X1900XTX

Is this old news? It must be. Just in case I'll act like it isn't.

I upgraded from a 7800GT to the X1900XTX from ATI. I was putting the OEM cooler back on the 7800GT card so I could sell it and I thought just for a whim I would see if the NV Silencer 5 Rev 3 I had on the nVidia card could be modded to work on the ATI card. I was just curious. It just kept getting better. The mounting holes lined up perfectly. Nearly all of the RAM chips were making contact. The length was exactly right. Everything. Well, almost everything. Two small issues; There are two RAM chips that don't touch. No problem, just put a small copper heatsink on each, there's plenty of room. The two pin fan plug will not fit the three pin ATI fan header. Easy fix, either wire in a standare PC plug and connect it elsewhere or snip off the ATI plug and splice it into the NV5. Either method will work fine.

For this I temporarily made an adapter to get power from my fan control panel. The temps were ~10% lower on average than the stock cooler and the sound level was drastically reduced. As you well know the NV's are quiet.

So if you were hoping to stick on an Arctic Cooler this is your chance. Below are some pics.

But this cooler's life was short lived because I already this kit on order and went ahead and installed it. Temps are lower yet and the sound level is nothing.

dang, that's pretty amazing cooling on that Thermalright. It's a V-1 Ultra with two Arctic Fan 8s right?

If only, if only, if only Arctic Cooling would make a DHES cooler for the X1800 and X1900 series...I would so be first in line for one. I think a silent DHES cooler should be mandatory for the kind of heat these beasts put out. It's not like it would be much more expensive than the metal slug with the gerbil wheel in it.

Woah, your latest cooling solution looks fantastic.

What kinds of temps are you getting on it, and how about an OC?

But the AC silencer has no cooling of the voltage regulators, so realistically I would not want to be running a x1900xt using that cooler.

The fan is covered on the bottom, so it actually provides no cooling for that part of the card.

You're stating VRM cooling is an issue and he begs to differ in the quote. If it were an issue, he would've mentioned it.

or didn;t run it long enough to find out that it was an issue. No way i'd leave them uncooled with that kinda juice running through them...
