I was wondering if it was at all possible for 8X AGP to finally make a difference. Did any reviewers force a 6800U to run at 4X AGP to see it if was held back? I know most folks will have a new board, but I was wondering about folks with 4X boards.

Mainly just curious though.

Probably not until games take advantage of the extra bandwidth. Anyway, 3DC used AGP 4x, but they also only used a P4 2.53GHz w/FSB533. That slower CPU and system doesn't really allow the 6800U to pull significantly ahead of the 9800XT/5950U, except at 16x12 AA+AF.

I would venture to say that anyone who spends $500 on a VC would have an 8x capable MB. I could be wrong though.

Those things have 256 MB of Ram on them why would they need system ram at all?

I dunno.

I know all about AGP 8X largely being marketing, I was just curious if anyone had thought to try a comparison with the fastest card around.

When the 6800U actually comes out, I think I could get one, and run some comparison tests, then stick it up on ebay when I'm done with it and post the results here. I will definitely be getting the new ATI cards and trying those out.

So you already made up your mind without even seeing the perfomance of the ATI's camP?

or you got a corporate discount crawling around?

I wish I had a corporate discount
Actually, I really have nothing better to do during the day than test parts and put them up on ebay when I'm done.
Typically I just stick with video cards and CPUs.

I'm not necessarily going to go ATI when it debuts...but I like getting good bang for the buck, and so far ATI + softmodding has been the answer for my video needs. If I can softmod an SE into a Pro and overclock it to an XT, I'm going to be all set for a long, long time

You wont be able to do that because the pipes are different for all 3. SE is 8, Pro is 12, XT is 16

I think it's more important to test 8X AGP vs. 4X AGP with new games rather than hardware. With the complicated physics engines that the newer games are running, that is where the improvement is going to be seen. Although, it's kind of a mute point, since in this example, the hardware seems to be well ahead of the game. 8X is almost a guarantee at this point in most new systems, so it's hard to notice how this feature really effects it since we wait for the games rather than the hardware.

Agree not much difference in actual performance from 4x to 8x. But, it is an interesting question...whether the new cards will be compatible with older boards.
