nVidia 6100, is it failing

after using MSI nforce 403 + GeForce 6100 IGP for about half a year, two USB ports went missing for no reason, they areidentified as unknown devices in Device Manager.

when the warranty is over, about 12 months +, Vista cannot work, the display just doesn't show up after log in.

I tried reformatting Vista but the result is the same, vista wont work

Then i tried it with Windows XP, it works, i can still open 3D games under WinXP

I am wondering if the chipset is failing.... Since i have read that nvidia has high failure rate and almost all of my friends with compaq nvidia 6150+amd laptop is changing mainboard every year

It's the newer parts supplied in chipsets after the 6150 that are problematic in the extreme (unexplained overheating, for one thing). The nForce 6100 / 6150 is/are just a very low quality part(s) when it comes to trying to play games. The only thing I know seriously negative about the 6100 / 6150 is that they generate artifacts when subjected to heavy pixel shader function coding.

But it should be able to support vista... Vista works initially, and failed to work after 12 months. 2 USB ports are missing for no reason, should i change the nforce mainboard to ATi chipset mainboard?

If you are trying to avoid owning any actual video card, AMD chipsets with onboard video are the best, true enough, although there is no IGP that I would consider acceptable, personally, for any PC I planned to play games on.

I wanted to change it now because i am afraid that when the mainboard fails, socket AM2 will be obsolete and AM2 mainboard price will be very high. Well, I am not a gamer, I just play simple games.

Or can i wait until the mainboard completely fails before changing, how long will AM2 socket be supported. AM2+ is compatible with AM2, but what about AM3?
