Wow, boring... hmm basically my GPU with another 150mhz and some faster mem .. I bought this bad boy a year ago in June and this is all that we've arrived at by march?

I fail to be impressed... I can't see this being a X1900XT/XTX killer like the 7800's were for the X8xx line. Maybe ATI really is back in the fight.

Well a little disappointing if this is correct- it will still be an awesome card though and if the pricing rumors are true at $499 MSRP for this is a great deal. I think ATI has more room to tweak more performance over time with their programable memory controller and the extra shader power- Of course I don't know the specific changes but this card looks like just a die shrink and speed bump so driver improvements over time won't be as dramatic. Can't wait for some benchies!!

Not bad but unfortunately for sure not enough to win the crucial benchmarks where both ATi and nVidia struggle maintaining a playable frame rate (read: F.E.A.R. ).

To all of you that insisted this was going to be a 32-pipe GPU, sorry but I just have to say it. TOLD YA SO!

Moral of the story, don't put so much faith in rumors and wishful thinking. It's going to be a good card but it's not going to be the monster 1900XTX killer that many of you were counting on and telling everyone to wait for.

If the MSRP is low enough then it might be a good deal but otherwise it doesn't seem to be anything special.

Heh, sad to leave the nVidia camp but I guess I'll do it as well. Nevertheless, I'm gonna wait for 7900 GTX to see benchies. Then I'll grab the fastest card around.

That's the logical thing to do.. Though I don't expect surprises if we take into consideration theoretical numbers.. I'm happy I went with my x1900XT

  • 7900GTX / X1900XTX
memory: 52 GB/sec / 49.6 GB/sec : winner GTX (almost a tie)
memclock: 812 (1625) mhz? / 775 (1500) mhz
pixel shader ops: 15720 / 31200 : winner XTX
pixel fill: 10480 / 10400 : virtual tie
texture fill: 15720 / 10400 : winner GTX
vertex: 1310 / 1300 : virtual tie

now, the interesting thing will be the XTPE that you know is lurking. if nVidia can get that memory to run at 1625, ATi should be able to do so as well.
clearly, the card that wins the benchmark will be based on the benchmark. we won't see consistent close results like we've been used to over the history of 3d acceleration. if ati is right, however, and games really load up on shader ops, clearly the xtx is more future proof.

but what is future proofing worth in the graphics world?

I just find it so freakin hard to believe that since July, all Nvidia has been able to muster up is a die shrink. :mad;

BTW, rumor is that MSRP for the 7900GTX will be $599. Still too high for what it is IMO.

Yup, this is disappointing.

I guess they're waiting for G80 to pull out the big improvement.

If what was rumoured holds some truth, then a great number of their personnel was transferred to the G80 preparation. That's why G71 is delayed and G80 is supposed to come earlier somewhere in summer..
Nevertheless I don't see why this is dissapointing. GTX512 was a great card, so a 90nm GTX512 with 650 core will probably be the antidote for XTX in many cases. In some surpass it in other be behind...
Guys don't believe rumours.. As much as I luv the speculation game myself that was the lesson #1 I've learned many years ago...

Anyway 6800GT, refresh months later 6800ultra only 50 core mhz increase.
For ATI x800XT, 5-6 months later refresh was x850XT and X850XTPE, same pipelines just core and memory clock increase.

Only with r580 was there major architecture increases with like triple shader performance so ati has to be congratulated.

If the MSRP was really $500 for 655mhz 7900GTX and it had mass availability it will still be a better refresh than what nvidia did last year with just a 50mhz core bump for their 6800Ultra.

You guys say this is dissapointing??? The 512MB 7800GTX was like what 530MHz, and you say 655MHz is DISSAPOINTING???

EDIT: And it's quad SLI'able too!!! Hey wait a minute, I have a Quad SLI ready mobo. Woohoo!!! Now I just need a 1000W+ PSU, enough money to pay for the cards, and a couple tanks of liquid nitrogen to keep the house cool.

It's disappointing because last July Nvidia seemed so far ahead of the competition.

From July until now, all we have gained is a die shrink and a speed bump. Nvidia became complacent and now we are stuck with the exact same card as we were before, albeit a little faster.

No pipe increases, probably no overhaul to the subpar AA algorithm and we're still probably gonna have to sit here and hear about texture shimmering.

It's a shame that GTX 512 wasn't G71 and G71 isnt G80. If we were looking at a G80 type option here, then I wouldnt be disappointed, but $599 for a card that I basically already have?

I think I'll pass, thanks.

Are you quoting correctly???

Memory Bandwidth
1625MHZ 52.0GB/s 7900 GTX, 1550MHZ 49.6GB/s
Vertex Power, 725MHZ 1450 MV/s 7900 GTX, 650MHZ 1300 MV/s
You have to remember the G7x Series is capable of geometry delta clock with independent clocks for vertex and ROP's I believe in relation to Pixel Pipes.
The weakness here is Pixel Shader cycles which is only ~ 50% or so of X1900 XTX.

You or we still know very little about this new card. A die shrink can allow a lot more than just a core bump!

I'm EXTREMELY tempted to place my order for an x1900xtx in from Monarch. BTW, anyone hear anything about the Visiontek xtx or that company as a whole? I'm not familiar with it but 575 for an XTX is nice.

Well, of course this is all hypothetical. Nvidia could very well have a 32 pipe card with better AA and the ever-so-elusive angle independent AF waiting.

The disappointment is based solely on the information at hand. Normally I dont get all worked about pre-release info, but the last couple releases have been preceded by reasonably accurate information.

Errr, this is just another rumor on a different website?

Ever think of that MORPH? Until it actually launches, all we have are several rumors, all different.

I think we'll need to see some benches, price, availability before we can pass any judgement on this card?

Or should we just keep flip flopping opinions on it based on pre-NDA rumors until we know the truth?
