Nvidia G92 will be a beast

NVIDIA SAYS its G92 high-end graphics card will deliver almost a teraflop of computing performance.

In an analyst webcast, Nvidian Michael Hara says that the chip will be ready for Christmas, a release cycle the company adopted with G80, where high-end products come out for Chrimbo and the mid-range and low-end products hit in the spring.

This suggests a couple of things. One, that the delays we saw to the release of Nvidia hardware through 2006 and 2007 have now been factored into the schedule, to a point where we're going to see yearly updates of the high-end part every Q4. This is pretty nifty. Second, Nvidia doesn't see the benefit in releasing all three ranges of cards together, preferring to let the 'halo' effect of the high-end card provide a few months of advanced marketing for the mid-range parts.

Second, it puts DAAMIT between a rock and a hard place. AMD is readying Barcelona, and Intel is preparing its own native quad-core chip in Nehalem to hit at the same time. ATI will be prepping the R600 refresh for the end of the year and Nvidia will be hitting with the GeForce 9800. Tough stuff.

The actual power of G92 might surprise some. The 8800 can rustle up about 330Gflops, which means the green team is suggesting that the 9800 could be three times more powerful. If that's true, the question remains - why bother? What games are going to take advantage of that? If the answer is Crysis at 2560x1600, Nvidia better hope that the game doesn't slip much further than it already has. µ

I was going to step my 8800GTS to the GTX, not any more. Starting to save for that thing. It will be a good Christmas.

Of course if you keep waiting, something even faster will come out in 6 months - 1 years, etc.

You should buy a graphics card when the games you run force you to sacrifice too much image quality or speed is unacceptable. In addition, nothing is to say the card will not be delayed.

I wonder how many people actually play at that resolution seriously. I know there's some, but I'm willing to bet that a vast majority of the gamers out there won't, obviously they won't buy these high-end cards either. I just think it's strange how people harp on super ultra high res performance when it's not the majority.

Meh...just my thought...I'd be happy to play 1280x1024 with maxed AA and AF and all the options set to max. That's all my monitor supports. WHatever card runs the new DX10 games smoothly at those settings will be what I buy, based on price of course.

Nvidia has said nothing :*( stop listening to crap theinquirer.net say. Nvidia hates the theinquirer and if you ever been to media even on the slide show nvidia show they always have one page saying "Don't leak to Inquirer" .

Also i don't know if Nvidia wants to just release a G90 just this year when they still capitalize all the cash on G80 untill Q1 2008. R&D cost alot of money and nvidia wants to get its money worth.

Oh it's so simple, Clovertown is Quad Core Xeon Dual Processor 65nm node, Harpertown is Quad Core Xeon Dual Processor 45nm node, Tigerton is Quad Core Xeon Quad Processor 65nm node.

Shanghai is AMD Multiprocessor Quad Core 45nm node.

that's not what i meant ... i know what everything stands for

they come up with such great "code names" ... then we end up with unimaginative Product Names

i want a "Tiger" in my computer
... just not a Leopard OS

and i am afraid AMD is going to be Shanghai'd before we ever see it

Leopard is a form of tiger. The one that has great running speed. AMD will be fine, it's just right now they are in a tough spot. Once Barcelona arrives they will be ok.

I'm more interested in the G80 refresh than a G92. Give me a 512MB 256-bit 128 sp 320 shader card for $299.

I am hoping a refresh will be something like 8900GT 640MB with 384-bit memory interface and full 128 shaders, just like 7900GT was > 7800GTX 256mb for $299 while retaining all the specs of the high end card such as 24 pipes.

4 gb of DDR2 for $130, $266 quad core, P35 chipset, 8900GT....every year building a new computer just gets more exciting

that would be awesome. i'd love to see an 8900GTS that has basically the performance of the 8800GTX. That's what we saw with the 7900GT compared to the 7800GTX. =)
