This is just to see what people are buying and own. Obviously, not a good random sample, I'm just interested in the results:
If you are switching or thinking about it, can I ask why?

I've owned both. Started with nVidia but my last few cards have been ATI.

Diamond Viper 770
Radeon 64 (the first Radeon)
Radeon 9500 Pro
Radeon 1900XTX
Radeon 3870

I'm admittedly an ATI fanboy. I don't know why, but I tend to pull for the underdog. I liked the fact that they were canadian, until they were bought by AMD, which makes me like them even more, since almost all GPU and CPU design now is done by American companies now.

Call me a retard, but I just like red video cards too.

My first video card was a Radeon 9200, followed by an x850xt, then currently an x1900gt, and I'll be buying the 3870 x2 on Thursday.

Interesting. I'd forgotten about Fujitsu. Competitors are always welcome.

I have owned video cards with chips from:

ATI
NVIDIA
3DFX
S3
Matrox
Cirrus Logic
Several others that time has forgotten.

Plus integrated from VIA, Intel, etc.

No BitBoyiiieeeez!!! This vote fails.

I usually go with best price to performance, although I've leaned towards performance at whatever the price lately. Just ends up working out better with less looking over the shoulder and looking forward to the next upgrade. Majority of my cards have been NV although I've owned at least 3 cards from each of their main competitors over the years (ATI and 3dfx).

Tseng Labs made my favorite video card: the ET6000. I bought it about 15 years ago, and it killed the Matrox Millennium at a fraction of the price. (It was a while ago, so I may have the wrong Matrox card).

After that I bought a Voodoo 5500, and overpaid for it. I should have gotten a GeForce 2, as they were cheaper and faster (albiet they didn't have SSAA support).

Got a X800 XL after that, and that lasted about 3 years. I just bought a HD 3850 to replace it. If I were buying a new computer, I would probably get a 8800 GT or GTS, but I didn't want to spend that much on my current POS.

You did WHAT?!?!

edit:

And related to the thread I buy the best card within my budget.

CL5424 -> ATI Rage Pro -> NV TNT2 - > NV GF3 -> ATI 9500 -> NV 7800GT

Before my current 2900Pro, my prio three cards and been Nvidia cards. 7900GS, 6800GS, Ti4200. I go for bang for the buck, not brand loyalty.

Ah yes, in fact I still think I have one of those in an old pentium machine gathering dust in the closet.

I'm looking rebuild my gaming rig in about a year. Whatever GPU is king is what i'll be going for.

I currently have a ATI x1950 xtx which was the best (IIRC, i have stopped paying much attention to hardware news until the time to rebuild approaches)just before the 8800's came out because my previous GPU died on me and i had some money to upgrade.

If ATI or Nvidia want my money, they'll have to earn it.

Awesome. Mine went with a Pentium 60, and then a K6 233.

I always buy the best card in the upper midrange level, which usually lands me with ATI. I'm currently sitting on an HD3850 I got for $144 at BestBuy, but wouldn't mind switching to Nvidia should they offer a new, more powerful upper midrange card.

I do the same and my main rig now sports a 3870.

Hmm lets see,
Trident 512k on my 386
added the socketed other 512 for a full meg on my 486
Geforce 2 in the pentium (good old PII celeron A, overclocked 50% from 300 to 450)
the P3 600 was a laptop with an Ati Card, no end of trouble, every driver update was a 3 hour ordeal. Every EQ patch required a new driver, which had me offline for nearly a day to get it working.
P4 was an Ati 9200 at first, not bad, but soon upgraded to a 9800 SE, see above.
Departed with the agp to a pcie x800xl, another set of driver nightmares.
7900 Gt, first card I really liked
Got a great deal on an x1900xtx, so gave ati another shot, spent $200 on parts trying to get it working, reinstalled os, gave up, turfed the card on ebay and put the 7900 back in.
8800 GT 1Gig, my new fav card.

-edit- bottom line is I cant deal with Ati's crap drivers, will never go back

Where's the "I buy whatever's best in price-to-performance" option?

We're not all fanboys or fanboys in doubt here.

GPU history:
(S3 1MB and 2MB 2D variants)
Orchid Righteous (3DFX Voodoo 1)
S3 Trio 3D 4MB AGP (Well needed new 2D card..this card's 3D capability was joyful (I have very dark sense of humor))
Riva TNT2 M64 (32MB I think) agp
3DFX Voodoo3 3000 16MB
Geforce 256 SDR
Radeon 7200
Geforce4 TI4400
Radeon 9800 pro
Geforce 7600 GT
Geforce 7900 GTO
Voodoo 4 4500 AGP (Test purpose)
Geforce 2 MX (Test purpose)
S3 Trio 4MB (was for server use)
Geforce 8800 GTS 640MB - Current

S3 - 4
3dfx - 3
Nvidia - 7
ATi - 3
VIA - 1
----
I also have one laptop with Radeon Xpress 200 IGP and other with some VIA Chrome thingy. Xpress 200 IGP just rocks! 163 points from 3DMark06 (AMD Turion MK-56 (or something like that)). I'll try to run Unreal Tournament 3 later.
----

8800 GTX with 350? is tempting (well in EU)..but I think I'll wait for GT200/R700. G80-8800 GTS 640MB with 25% overclocking should be enough for few months
