Ok, let's see if I remember my GPU and CPU history from early 80s until now. Counting laptops but not machines for significant others or parents.

Video by Woz, Apple ][ w/ 64k
ATI All In Wonder 256, 8088 @ 10 mhz!
Trident 8900(?) with a *meg* of ram in a 386/33 @ 40 mhz
Tseng Labs ET4000 in a 486/66 @ 80 mhz
Number 9 S3 virge, P166
toshiba on-board S3 virge MX, P233
some sort of S3 integrated abortion on a highly flammable PC Chips board, K6/266 @300(?).
NVidia GF1, Athlon 850 socket A <-- I discovered 3d games
ATI Radeon DDR (aka 7200), same Athlon 850 socket A
ATI Radeon DDR, XP 1800+ @ 1.8ghz
NVidia GF4200ti, same XP 1800+.
Radeon 9600XT, same XP 1800+.
ATI Mobility 9700 (aka 9600 mobile), amd64 3200+ mobile
ATI X850XT, 3200+ amd64 venice @ 2.4
ATI X1800XT, same 3200+ venice @ 2.4
NVidia 7600GT, E4500

planned and in progress:
7600GT -> 9600GT, E4500 -> X3210

I sidegrade a lot, passing components to family members. And keep hardware until it qualifies for social security.

Yeah where is the "whichever is better at the time" option? nVIDIA and ATI are just names. Both are fine companies. Both take turns leading the benchmarks. Both take turns getting my money. =)

GeForce 4 Ti4200 128mb

Evenly split technically, but I have been leaning toward ATI since i bought the 9800 Pro in 2004. They are my company of choice, but if Nvidia ever becomes undeniably better at every price point I'll go for them. But ATI has been better at the prices I'm going for in recent years, so they are top choice, not to mention I like the drivers and features better.

Im back with ATI. Been with them a long time, since their first Radeon. Had several Nvidia cards since the first Geforce. Gave up on Nvidia when I had 2 7800GT cards SLIed and had too many problems, especially with older games I still play. Went back to ATI and will probably continue to do so. for now.

Need better pool options, like "Whichever has fastest card in price range at time of purchase"....

I own and have owned Voodoo, ATI, Nvidia cards. And at the time of each purchase, they were the fastest cards out there at the time. I currently have an ATI 9800 Pro, a Nvidia 7800GTX, and a Nvidia 8800 GT in the three computers I own. The ATI 9800 is in a system I built back in 2002, the 7800GTX in 2005, and the 8800 GT a few months ago. It is all about what the best card is at the time. I currently prefer Nvidia, but I sure wish and hope that ATI is starting to get their act together, because without ATI, you see how Nvidia will treat the market with only introducing the mid-range card upgrades since that is the price point where most people would consider spending money on a card (the $150-300 range). Now I didn't buy the 8800 GTX Ultra because it is over a year old and STILL costs about the same. I also only have a monitor that does 1650x1050, so it didn't make sense for me to spend 3 times as much money, and get about 2-5% performance increase....

3dfx?

Voodoo 2 in SLI: Smoothest game experience to date.

Currently I'd have to pick nVidia though. Hardware always seems to go back and forth, but ATI drivers have always been crap to me. That can always change of course, but the thread is not about the future

Lol, looking at these results, we apparently have more fanboys than people who are willing to switch for a better product.

I've used NVIDIA almost exclusively since 3dfx went the way of the dodo. I've never really had a reason to switch.

Running an ATI X1900xt 512 meg in my primary desktop and an ATI X2600xt in my HTPC. I'd like to upgrade to one of the newer Nvidia 8800 GT/GTS 512 meg units but haven't found a must have game that justifies the cost and threw my money into a Blu-Ray reader/DVD burner drive instead.

i guess u didn't mind having a worse off card in the time of the 7800/7900 series while others had the 1900's

This is a really bad poll. How many people are naive enough to be brand loyal? I buy whatever is the best deal for the money. That is what drives competition and innovation.

I am willing to bet you more half of the polls posted here are nearly useless. its all for funs and giggles, just like putting your system spec/configuration in your sig - not something most anyone would care or would help them in any possible way anyway

nVidia because they currently have the best single card hardware around.

I really like my little HD 3850. Exceptional value for $160, and in my subjective testing it provides much better HD playback than any of NV's offering at this time. And I now understand why some folks say AMD drivers are friendlier to Vista than NV's. (Not on XP, though)
