I`m using a GF2 Ti so speed is not the main factor for me in gaming, stability and image quality are more important to me with drivers, most games I play are RPG games and FPS like CS,DOD .

The "frills" as you call them is just a new layout of controls, like anything else you either like or hate. I think too many people always expect newer drivers to be faster,if you look at real figures you will always see that it depends on the games etc used for benchmarks.

The REASON people expect newer drivers to be faster is that Nvidia has ALWAYS released faster drivers than the previous ones. This is based on their superb track record. However, Det 40 is an ANOMALY. It is obvious - to me - they have copied ATI's Quack debacle to make it APPEAR the performance is better in BENCHMARKS than it actually is in real applications.

Here is a driver that is clearly optimized ONLY for 3DMark2001.

Drivers do 3 things, stability, image quality, performance in speed,if you get all three great! However in the real world you don`t always get that, not even with Nvidia drivers.

As for being 3DMark2001 optimized I would have to agree with that statement,I also read some games like Quake3 are faster,it`s no brainer they were released because of ATi.

I would guess that we see "certified" det 40.xx drivers pretty soon that DO provide what Nvidia promised in these beta ones. It's just sad that we had to see them resort to these silly marketing tactics.

My GeForce3 ti200 went from 6300 to 6900 in 3dmark2001SE, I haven't tried any games yet with it. I llike the new menu thing though.

I agree,Nvidia are big enough to take on ATi without using those tactics, however big companies always do what they think is in their best interest, however right or wrong it maybe.

So my question is: WHY? Did you think they thought they'd "get away with it"? This is way too obvious and it tarnishes their (up-to-now) sterling reputation.

Evidently - according to TomsHardware - it took Nvidia to point out ATI's Quack drivers. Nvidia's 3DMalarky drivers were quickly found out by almost everyone the first day.

Ask Nvidia that question, but I look at it this way,new set of Nvidia drivers to try out,if I don`t like them I`ll go back to 30.82 drivers ,I`ll leave Nvidia and ATi to battle it out on marketing tactics,in the end I`ve choices on drivers/cards etc.

Ok guys here's the deal-

Under 3d antialiasing tab put a check in the Texture Sharpening tab and run just the Nature Demo.
Watch your fps.

Now uncheck Texture Sharpening and run the Nature Demo- THERE'S A 30FPS DIFFERENCE!

Nvidia is just lowering the image quality. You can see the difference.

I'd LOVE to . . . in this case it is a rhetorical question . . . ATI never really commented on their Quack drivers either.

I see 3DMalarkey has stuck. Do I win a prize? A tagline quote?

Lol. I just love when people coming up with such idiotic conclusions....

Let's look at the facts, shall we:

Texture sharpening was disabled in all previous driver sets. In fact, it was not even in the driver panel before.
Just because it's here now, and you can turn it on at the expense of the fps hit, means Nvidia is cheating?

Using the same logic, ATI is cheating because they have FSAA box, unchecked by default.

Really. How do you know it was disabled in all previous driver sets?

Going back to earlier drivers the image quality looked as good as the new one's with the texture sharpening checked.

Do you want to know what I think? Of course you do. Why else would you be here?

I think that NVIDIA has been slowly fixing bugs, while at the same time dropping the performance of their cards. I've seen slight decreases in the performance of my GF3Ti200 for quite some time now, but some bugs have been steadily going away. Now, with this release, they're throwing caution to the wind and eeking out every once of performance they can without worrying about its effect on games. I'm sure that with the next few releases from the Det-40.xx family they will fix some of the bugs that they've got now while consequently lowering performance as little as possible.

For the few of you that have mentioned that this might be a response to the 9700 release, I have only this to say: ARE YOU KIDDING?! Of course it is. Why else would they be desperately releasing Betas with the same fanfare as a normal driver release? They're obviously hurried attempts to put the GF4s closer to ATI. No, this obviously will not make any 9700 killers out of their cards, but at least they can win on a price/performance ratio.

My question is, how much do these drivers change the performance of the GF4 MX series? This may be enough to dethrone the 9000... I have no idea.

Glad you guys seem to have to much luck.

I went from 29.42 on my winXP/geforce2 GTS/21" trintron and I got horizontal flickering lines across my screen at random intervals, even on the desktop. Backed down to 30.82's and got the same problem.

Now I'm back 29.42 and happy.

From what I've seen they don't seem to be doing anything at all even in 3DMark for non-DX8 boards.

Still waiting for Anand to weigh in on this.....if he's listening....

oops, that's what I get for skipping right ahead to the forums. Still, link to another site, not an AT article unless I'm missing the link you mean?

Anyone get the error with WinXP Pro telling that the drivers aren't tested and may make the system unstable? Kinda like the USB drivers for the Sound Blaster Audigy in WinXP?

I just got it and stopped the installation...

Is it okay to install anyway? Am I the first to get the error? Did I do the right thing by stopping??

Duh, these aren't WHQL certified.

Just install them, worst case you uninstall them and revert to your previous drivers.

He has posted a link on the front page to a review this morning. I liked directly in an earlier post.

What was your verdict on these Viper GTS. Are your contacts back in?

I can't wear contacts until Tuesday at least.

I'll keep playing with them, but so far I haven't found a reason not to like them.

... 1024 x 768 x 32

... 1024 x 768 x 16

Yeah, but what about IQ and performance in *actual* games?

Wait, saw replies to my reply, edited a reply, found the link (I think the one in question) and viewed it.

Higher in a benchmark.
Higher in Quake (where EVERYTHING is high these days, big fuggin whoop)
Slower in the other game benchmarks where more FPS would actually be useful.

And this dork recommends them?? I'm looking at the ircrontic.com link, think that's the one I was supposed to follow. To recommend these drivers he should change his url to ironic.com.
