you like to argue .. i am looking for a *solution*

Lots of interesting ideas and comments in this thread. My "hat is off" to you Apoppin for reaching that "Epiphany". Similar to myself a while back now.
In order to achieve a better place, all anyone in here really has to do, is follow that little sticky at the top of this forum. In it are a few simple guidelines to follow. As I have mentioned to Apoppin, that sticky was put there by the moderators as just a little reinforcement. A reminder.
Sometimes, intense debates can produce excellent results. Sometimes it can even prompt our own testing. Apoppin, other members, and myself were in a pretty lengthy debate last year when R600 was released. Finally, we both agreed to conduct some testing. It seemed to have answered a lot of questions and people had some real data to work with. This is cool. Something to strive for.
Other times, debates can get ugly. Why this occurs, I do not know. It suddenly turns personal, which just should not happen.
It usually happens when one of the debaters is cornered with some facts and better logic. You know what happens when you corner a badger, right? They are going to strike out any way they can.
I'm all for spirited debates, 100%. When it gets personal though, certain members WILL attract unwanted attention from any mod, in any forum. It takes such a small amount of effort to keep on a personable level with fellow members here.
Sorry for the long post here, but just look at these four little things:
***Zero personal attacks (no matter the degree). No matter how small you think a dig is, it still won't go unnoticed.
***No baiting other members into an altercation. This seldom happens without a personal attack of some sort. Just don't do it.
***Keep the threads ON TOPIC. Do not derail threads. It would seem the biggest reason for
thread derailment is a member getting personal about the opinion of another member.
Discuss the topic, not what you think of a member for having an opinion. Explains itself.
***Learn when to say, "When". Agree to disagree. No need for 15 pages of getting nowhere. This one is a biggie. If by the end of say 80 pages of posts (exaggerating) know when to call it quits. You most likely cannot MAKE somebody see things your way without proper facts or data, and sometimes even with it. Page after page after page of getting nowhere just causes angst.
I for one, am for continuing with a single graphics/video forum. Why? Because it has come such a very long way from what it once was. And with continued moderator support, and member cooperation, it will continue to improve.
I am against segmenting video into a pure tech & a free for all minimally moderated type thing. We are concentrating on putting the anarchy to rest, not encouraging it. Apoppin, your ideas have merit, but not when we have come this far as a vid forum.
We are doing well, with a few glitches here and there, but they are continually dealt with. And so become more and more like a forum somebody wants to be a part of.

/my 82.5 cents.
i largely agree with you, Keys. You are in fact using my *own argument* that "pressure & heat" produce diamonds from carbon.
Your *solution* is fine with me -
more moderation
here. i am guessing the senior mods are agreeing with you since you will be doing the modding.
- it is just going to be a lot of work for only 2 guys - especially if you are also participating in threads that turn ugly. My hat is off to you. And
at the least, i will not be participating in the mean-spirited debates any longer. i still think a "highly technical" subsection of Video may - perhaps in the future - prove to be a worthwhile addition as our membership here grows; an over-flow for the
esoteric discussions, perhaps
[i know, like B3D ]
seriously, i am trying to stay away from there. Those guys will discuss and run a subject into the ground over a single
minute architectural detail. The are also trying to make a "universal benchmark" program for "real world" testing that is SO unwieldy and [apparently] illogical, i really have to wonder about their "practicality" ... i could do 1000 benchmarks in the time it takes to even
agree on what they are actually attempting to do. i guess, by 2011 we may will see a great program, perhaps; and i will have 100,000 benchmarks done by then. Maybe i should go pester
them.
i do however believe i still have some unique insights to contribute here as i think i found a novel way to benchmark what was formerly considered really time-consuming and difficult. Stay tuned. A few weeks at most.
EDIT:
Perhaps you might consider *one* stickied thread that is "NVIDIA vs. AMD" where "anything goes" .. a kind of L&R/P&N to let the guys who feel they need to, insult each other how ever they wish - without ANY moderation [you would never set foot there].
It might work to let the pressure off - kind of like bare-fisted
"Video Fight Club"
2nd EDIT:
UNREAL .. they are actually considering a similar thing in PC gaming

and reference to what we are suggesting for here!

no way .. actually
Schadenfroh expanded on my idea .. ATF could create a
single "P&N style" Tech forum for the really hot debates .. if ANY thread gets too rude for ANY tech forum, it is simply *moved* to the Tech "HOT Topic Forum" and the posters are notified by e-mail automatically. Those threads will disappear from among the "approved" treads and the guys can argue amongst themselves 'till they turn Gray. None of the regular posters will be bothered, or even care or notice.
