NYC ain't just Manhattan right?

A friend of mine wants to tell me that NYC is only Manhattan. Brooklyn, Bronx, etc. also belongs to NYC, right?

Actually, there is some validity to what your friend is saying.

Technically, New York City includes all the boroughs-- Manhattan, Staten Island, Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn...

But when people speak of "the city", or "going into the city", they mean Manhattan.

Yeap, im in queens and when I say im going to the city, it's Manhattan and when I say Im going to the Island, it's long island, but guess what, Brooklyn and Queens are linked on the same Island as Long Island..

What confuses alot of people is the use of "the city" when us NYers refer to manhattan.....


Manhattan is the Central "city" of New York.... and Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn, SI are the "suburbs".... so we say we're going to the city... if we're going to manhattan...

it's different.

Because all you people care about is your garbage. Now that the Dump is closed, no one cares. Staten Island should be a part of New Jersey, not New York. If you go over a SI/NJ bridge, you blink your eye and you hit land. If you go try and go over the Verrazano, you could take a nap and still be where you started. Same goes for getting to Manhattan on the Ferry, the ride takes about 25 minutes.

i try to avoid SI when going to NJ... i'll go Queens-->Bronx-->NJ even if it is a little longer...

Thats because we're the hub of New York in a sense. All people use us for is to connect New Jersey with Brooklyn. They said something like 85% of the Tractor Trailers that drive here don't even stop. I'm so close to New Jersey, I do most of my shopping there. Woodbridge and Menlo Park are minutes away. Short Hills is a little further at almost an hour but beats Train-Ferry-Subway or Park-Ferry-Subway.

If you live in manhattan, and you're filling address forms, under "city" you would list "New York." If you lived in any of the outer boroughs, you're city is actually listed under the local town, like Elmhurst, Woodside, Besonhurst, Fresh Meadows, Flushing, etc...

so, therefore, by rules of the United States Post Office, if you live in New York City, you live in Manhattan!

That only applies to Queens. Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island are *Borough*, New York and Manhattan is New York, New York. Its pretty screwed up...
