/makes savory oatmeal with chicken broth, scallions, ground pork, and whatever I can find in the fridge...

It's the ONLY way to cook oatmeal.
Cooking it with milk makes it too "creamy" for my liking. I'll add the milk after it cooks, thank you very much.
Alright guys, oatmeal question for you.
I love the Maple and Brown sugar flavored oatmeal (with water, thank you), but its ridiculously expensive in the packs (I usually eat 3 sometimes 4 packs at a time ).
Anyone have any good recipes to take some quick oats and give it a similar flavor? Closest ive been able to get is using brown sugar and some imitation maple (no kidding, to make it maple and brown sugar flavored ), but its still not really that close. Tried some cinnamon too.
Anyone have any solid oatmeal recipes? Its getting cold out here, and freezing where I work, itd be nice to have a cheap solid meal in the morning.
:hmm:
I am intrigued by your ideas and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
edit:
Alright, I'll be a little nicer and try and contribute i guess, despite you just spouting off random insults.
First, I dont eat at mcdonalds or any other fast food chain for that matter. 2ndly, before you say anything about my weight or any other related insult to my health (since it seems like thats common on ATOT), I'm not overweight in the slightest.
Now, I happen to not mind the taste of that "processed crap", but if you have a good oatmeal recipe, how about you share it, like I originally asked?

I eat oatmeal every morning at work. 1 pack, 3/4 cup water. 1:45 in the microwave and it's perfect. I use milk sometimes though on the rare occasion i make it at home.
The local grocery store has an 18 count variety pack for 5 bucks after tax. 27 cents per pack. That's a pretty cheap breakfast!
Salt is an acquired taste. Did it, then didn't ... couldn't tell a difference. So no salt. You almost always add a pinch of salt to boiling water before you add the grain product. Oatmeal, Pasta, rice, etc. Without that pinch of salt, things taste too flat.
You don't taste the salt, it doesn't make things "salty," it keeps things from tasting like crap.
That powdery crap in a package isn't oatmeal...

Im guessing that the misconception when cooking oatmeal with milk is that you get a pasty glue like dish. Its all about ratio here. When it comes to cooking oatmeal with milk, i bring milk to a boil and oats until preferred consistency....
To be honest with you guys, this water\oatmeal comes to a surprise to me just how many people cook it this way. Might be a regional thing, but I do remember back when I was a kid in NY, I had friends mothers use milk to cook oatmeal. Then I moved to the South and was introduced to grits and butter. Not fan of grits honestly.
just buy a thing of quaker quick oats, or old fashioned oats if you have time to cook them
add a TBL spoon of brown sugar and a tsp of cinnamon to them
profit
maple syrup is also good, the real kind, not that Jemima crap
Instead of creating a new thread, I figured I'd bump this one. I just created a new oatmeal masterpiece, and it isn't even as good as it could be. Here it is, ignore at your peril....
Cut apples up into a bowl. Berries would be better, but I only had apples
Add ~3 teaspoons brown sugar. Vary to taste
Shake some cinnamon on top
Dump some quick oats on top dry. I used McCann's instant, but any kind of quick oat will work.
Here's the important part. Heat up coconut milk in the microwave, then pour it over the stuff in the bowl, and stir it up. I left mine medium warm, but it can be heated as hot as desired. It's fuckin' delicious, and I can't believe I've gone this long without trying it. HIGHLY recommended, especially if you're tired of the standard oatmeal preparation.
