A cut in the military doesn't mean a cut in quality ....

Right, just like it won't when it comes to socialized healthcare right?

We have the best military equipment in the world. We are at least 10+ years ahead of every other nation.
Why the hell do we need to spend hundreds of billions on new toys when the economy is doing horrible? We can take cuts. We fall back 5 years.. we are still ahead. All we have to do is keep the current toys we have in good working condition. No more purchasing F-22s, etc. till the economy is fixed.

yeah, and yet we've heard story after story about how the troops in Iraq don't have proper essentials, equipment is breaking down or we didn't have enough there for support. Purchasing equipment, funding R&D are great ways of stimulating the economy. It's part of our military infrastructure. Infrastructure...isn't that what the stimulus bill was supposed to fund?

What's more important? An additional F-35 or appropriate armament for critical infantry (only those in active combat for example)? I won't pretend to know the most appropriate answer but I can conjure up good arguments for both sides and I would hope that such dialogue is not only present and active in this administration and in our government.

While many champion defense as infrastructure, I find it odd that they also say that they wish to reduce government's size and yet spare no expense when it comes to ballooning the budget with weapons. There are many interesting private ventures that are both government and private sector related that can lead to massive private sector growth for other sectors as well (via DoE, NASA).

I say if you want to keep defense spending high at least be truthful and admit that you are promoting big government. With that in mind work to focus attention on what the private sector cannot accomplish on its own so that you can boost them enough to get the private sector moving. With that in mind, police the budget so that we are not feeding bid government; so that we feed government only so that we can feed the private sector more.

ex. Look at Ares.... private might due to government investment the likes of which private enterprise could not achieve (NASA).

In addition, what's wrong with culling the BS partisanship based stuff classified as "defense" as well? I want our military to be the strongest, most powerful, elite force out there, but I want to make sure we are getting our money's worth too. Should I just sit back and STFU when our troops get fvked up due to misappropriated resources? We all know the air force needs their pricey aircraft (inherent hazard of such delicate and powerful machines) but at least be responsible with it and don't fvk over other troops due to political bs.

$400mill for each presidential helicopter? LOL. What BS. Appropriate and procure effectively.
Pay Lockheed for some cool shit and don't have the pentagon waste their time with busllhit.

Seats that withstand a 9G's impact are pretty cool though  and the prez. needs adequate protection/presentation, but don't waste our money on it.

Reminds me of the way my parents think: if something is absolutely necessary but cause problems you'll have to accept that you'll be digging yourself a hole but never dig one that you can't get out of and don't even think about digging some more simply because you want to.

But why would I think it took some balls to say what he did?

Well, because he had to know that he would get a ban for it (rightly so) - and it's simply a demonstration of the undercurrent coming from some of our "republican" friends around these parts - those who would like to say it, but hold a still tongue once it's said..

Tonight's speech reminded me strongly of JFK,I am hopeful that our current young president's strong support on developing clean energy and on R&D for things ike cancer cures will once again fuel and energize our high tech sector.

I was thinking that as well. I have high hopes for Obama.

Well, they do say Obama makes a great speech... to bad its policy that helps generate jobs.. not great speeches...

I was in school during the nation's great push to the moon, it was an exciting time to be a student, school boards spent money, there were monies put into science teachers, labs and a new fangled invention put out by a company called Apple.

The race to the moon, our desire to be there first.. the support of the president in achieving that objection led to such huge technological gains for this nation. If Obama
is serious about funding the R&D for the clean energy it will be the shot in the arm that we need.

Money put into furthering scientific knowledge is, imho the best stimulus plan going!

The problem is not money these days. The problem starts at home with piss poor parenting leading to kids not giving a shit. Until the problems at home fixed no amount of money can fix the issues. If the students cared 1/1000 about school as they do their cell phone the education system would be fixed.

Have you actually been inside a public school in a poor community? Some of these buildings are in deplorable
condition. A lot of school don't even have adequate books and instructional materials, let alone any sort of
advanced equipment and resources.

I like to equate "balls" with gutsy action in defense of morality and that statement exhibited arrogance and ignorance, which are not ballsy, and can certainly be misconstrued as cowardice.

Doing something in light of persecution or expected retribution is not gutsy or ballsy. The morality behind it is the only thing that saves it from unequivocally being labeled as stupidity EVERY TIME.

If you meant to say that he was a phony or a puppet that would be within your rights and many, including myself, would like to hear your arguments (no one can deny that he is from the 'windy' city). That said, it is very difficult for an intellectually sound conversation to proceed normally, unabated and untarnished, when introducing such malice. It can be said in so many more direct fashions.

<---grew up around all sorts of people and many of them African Americans (Americans). I don't care who the hell you are, what race or what gender, that statement was petty and served only to belittle the argument.

Just a short note on schools.. my public schools encouraged laziness through a new math program (IMP) where teachers would provide answers for assignments (which would have 1-2 questions) before you turned in an assignment. I went from growing up a math genius to falling far behind, admittedly because of my own laziness but the system should not deliberately encourage 14 year-olds to fall behind. There are a lot of institutional problems that aren't to do with too much money, not enough money, etc. From people I met later involved in the schools they said they had a quota to fill for grades and so the teachers were encouraged to throw A's at kids like me (kids who learned nothing, were lazy, but knew how to work the system for an A).

As if in a prime time speech to the average American the prez is going to go into the level of financial detail the idiots on CNBC were demanding.

Sometimes I wonder about the reasoning abilities of our "investor class."

Well, you can count me out.

I think that the presence of such a frail, goofy woman in a position of power threatens a lot of conservative's world views. More so than her voting record. Much of their bashing of her has to do with mannerisms and personality.

Thread should have ended right here to save them embarrassment. But we all know they can't keep their fucking mouths shut long enough to let the country forget why they were voted out in the first place. So it's a win/lose. Will these insane people keep repeating the same mistakes and continue to expect different results? Time will tell.

Not enough details. Over all, I give it a B. Not terrible, decent.

I never understand this criticism. In order to give details, you realize his speech would be several hours long, right? This is a state of the union, not a diligence briefing.
My thoughts too.

I spared myself the "Republican response," prepared before Obama's speech was even delivered. Honestly, I think the Republicans have mostly been playing Devil's advocate in hopes of having a presense in the public consciousness after losing their direction in the last elections. I don't want to even hear their official response, especially when they didn't even hear the speech they are responding too. :disgust:

I thought it was an excellent speech. Too much applause? Really, that was beyond control. It could have been much worse. And Obama's signing autographs? You have a problem with that? Whatever....

The last 8 years we didn't really have a president, we just had a guy who was the cover for the powers that be to do things with his stamp of approval, and he'd defend it.

I have to say though, one exception to that I've heard more about, is that Bush does deserve credit after the 2006 Democratic victory, that he changed course on the Iraq war.

He got rid of Rumsfeld, put the war critics - relatively speaking - in charge - and supported the 'surge' policy that all but one seniot military official in the chain of command opposed.
