President Obama listened to Republican gripes about his stimulus package during a meeting with congressional leaders Friday morning - but he also left no doubt about who's in charge of these negotiations. "I won," Obama noted matter-of-factly, according to sources familiar with the conversation.

And what is new in the Republican world? More of the same:
Boehner said congressional Republicans are also concerned about the size of the package.

Hopefully the Dems rally and grow a spine now and start using their new power to get things moving.
Would be nice if Pelosi and Reid stepped aside for younger Dems not so willing to cower.

Would be awesome... and damn well better happen. Well, Pelosi and Reid wont likely step aside, but at least they need to not be pains in the asses at this crucial time. I am a lib and usually vote dem, and am thoroghly happy we now have the house, senate and oval office... But Pelosi and Reid represent what I hate about the dems. They are so, "party and self first, country second" that it makes me sick.

If Obama, and the rest of congress bow down and push a Pelosi/Reid agenda I am just going to vomit. I have high hopes for Obama, and I am trying to remain positive, but he damn well better not let those idiots have thier way. grrr....

Sorry Red , like Bush, the gangsters Obama has put in charge of economic policy are thinking only of their own and k-street friends interest and will finally bankrupt USA once and for all - but at least they will get theirs. Black Bush has a similar 'decider' personality to boot as you can see.

I wouldnt take it to such extremes, or read anything on a biased blogsite... Obama is still in charge, and still has the opportunity to guide things. Its not the cabinet makes all the decisions. They are there to advise, not set policy, Obama will do that (hopefully well)

Lets see how he does this next year before we condemn him.

I agree with that, little zebo predictions are not self full filling either, just saying keep an eye out. I've been around long enough to see their is not a dime worth of difference between these parties - they primarily exist for a small minority of riches & throw a few bones to the bottom so there is not riots in the streets. As you can see with TARP II plans.

There are so many things they could be doing for the people but arnt
We have 1.3 million empty homes why is there a homeless problem?
Why are they paying off gamblers in credit default swaps who bet to lose?
Why are they paying off bankers to buy $18,000 toilets for their office instead of giving people in trouble with thier Mortgage a check?
Why are they not seriously taxing those over 250K instead of, borrowing, which is going to displace our currency as the worlds reserve, killing our future borrowing capability, when they all cash in?

and on and on

I support Obama in most things, but I do NOT support any of the continued bailouts and stimulus packages.

We cannot spend our way out of this mess.

The shoe is on the other foot.....the LEFT foot.

The right foot? The foot that got us into such a terrible economic mess, a totally unecessary war in Iraq, and a justified war in Afghanistan that got put on the back burner by them, and then started boiling over from neglect?

The foot that was for, by and of the obscenely rich? The foot whose party got completely voted out of control because of the miserable job they've done over the last eight years?

We're supposed to listen to this stink'in broke dick lame ass rotten foot for good sage advice as to how our nation should recover from the complete frick'in mess that they themselves created?

All I see coming from this broken gangrene infested foot for the next eight years is how it purposely drags itself in the sand making the other foot work even harder and harder to get the rest of the body where it needs to go - ER for major reconstructive surgery.

Well, I'll just add that some of these things are a byproduct of how our society operates. 1.3 million homes, but coupled with a homelessness problem is similar to the situation in the depression with food. Farmers could definitely grow the food, but had to sit on it (or throw some of it out) so that they themselves could make a living. Those houses aren't just sitting there....they are sitting there until the owner can sell for the most part, homeless be damned. This could and may very well be happening today. We are the world's "breadbasket" yet there are still some here that go hungry...

Questions 2 and 3 I agree with. Privatizing wealth and socializing losses is a bad way to go. With proper oversight, it should never get to the point where this is the only viable choice. (Recall my "too big to fail = big enough to be split up forcibly" mantra) Now that we are effectively in that situation, we need to think long and hard how to fairly deal with those involved as well as the bystanders.

Your last question presents a good remedy. Trickle-down economics has been a total failure, so why not go back to something we know isn't going to be the end of the world? In our parents' and grandparents' generation, these kind of tax rates for the wealthy were the norm, and *gasp*, it wasn't called socialist even by McCarthy...

Gotta love the whining about debt from the repubs as well- it's not like their leadership didn't double it in 8 years, or that they're somehow innocent wrt the current economic situation... and their usual transparent fussing wrt to taxes, particularly on top incomes, holds true to their usual disingenuous form...

"You know, I'm concerned about the size of the package. And I'm concerned about some of the spending that's in there, [about] ... how you can spend hundreds of millions on contraceptives," House GOP Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) later said.

"How does that stimulate the economy?"

You would think a guy with a name so close to Boner would be more careful choosing his words...
This reads like an episode of Arrested Development... I wonder if he continued on talking about his years as an AnalRapist (Analysis - Therapist).

I am very interested to see what comments sparked Obama's remarks. I am willing to bet it was questions on stupid unbased neocon accusations and ideal threats that they wouldn't support certain policies because of them. I am sure words like socialism, commie, and fairness were probably involved.

according to Fox...

"The "I won" comment came after Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., said Republicans believed cutting income taxed would do more to stimulate economic growth than providing a $500 per person payroll tax refund for individuals earning less than $200,000. The president said, according to those present, that this was an important philosophical divide between Republican and Democrats and that it had already been settled -- and would remain settled -- because he won the election."

Trying to find something from the AP because I tend to like my news with mostly just the facts in it. The paranoid and pathetic comments below though made that link worth clicking.
