Unfortunately, XBit has told us even one X1900XTX is an unbearable dustbuster!

For comparison, the Radeon X1900 XTX produces some noise even when its blower is working at a reduced speed, and when the speed is high, the noise is hardly bearable due to the irritating tone produced by the resonating plastic casing.

Now, with two of these little furnaces, you not only have to come up with 240W of power, but the heat dissipation will be kicking your dustbusters to higher levels more frequently. Big bonus- more hairdryer noise for your household, in a chorus.

Of course, that's not even the worst problem of Crossfire, the horrible defaults for all games that the user can't do anything about.

Oh well, you do get good Oblivion and and Super AA- but at what cost?

Sound familiar, anyone? Hello Rollo. Just couldn't stay away, could you? How about indicating your paid marketer status in your sig?

Pretty clear cut win in terms of frames for ATi in the hottest new game out. If the glitching is only a bug that can be ironed out, and is just a problem for FS, Crossfire is a much better way to play than SLI. I guess Ill try it and see if I have the same problems FS said they did.

edit, something interesting...

Guys I have something exciting coming very shortly today?. Feel free to write about it if you wish?.

Game: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Situation: Game supports AA. Game supports HDR. Game don?t support both.

Introducing: later today?. The ?Chuck? patch? supporting HDR AND AA?

Last week I got an email from a 3d Developer of ours (by the name of Chuck) saying if I was interested in checking out a proof of concept driver he whipped up that enables HDR plus AA at the same time. Well ya!!!

So fast forward to now, thanks to Chuck Ati users can enjoy this game at a brand new level of Image Quality. It will knock your socks off.

Plus the Chuck Patch also supports AFR Crossfire mode giving gains up to 80%. I urge you to benchmark this yourself but here is what Chuck measured.

Anyone considering buying a high end card would be well advised to not combine it with a craptastic generic PSU. As far as noise goes, it's louder than an average card but not so loud that I'd call it a jet engine, and it can easily be fixed with a $20 Accelero X2. On the other hand, there's absolutely nothing a 7-series user can do to add HDR+AA or HQ AF to his card, not to mention increased performance in applications that his gpu architecture is not well suited for.

The same applies to X1900 - just replace the word AF with AA or multi GPU and applications... with OpenGL games.

My point is that everyone should see both sides of the coin. It's not like ATi or nVidia have an ideal product on their hands. Anyone can think about what features really matter in his/her book and decide based on own preference.

Image quality is roughly the same, to be honest. Performance is also very close, just in Oblivion ATi owns nVidia. HDR+AA may be a valid argument for some people to choose ATi. Just like noise or SLI to buy nVidia.

If Crossfire was a mature solution, I'd honestly go and buy two Sapphires for Oblivion and other games. However, I'm afraid of bugs, stiff profiles and noise produced by two cards. Therefore, I pick SLI.

Yep, despite all the rumblings neither company has a part that kills the other, which is a good thing for competition. Plus, they're roughly the same IMO. You just have to figure what your needs are and buy accordingly.

I've traditionally bought nvidia parts until my most recent card...but since I have no interest in a multiple card solution and the games I play the most are source engine and Oblivion (and it will remain this way for some time I suspect) it makes sense for me to take preference of ATI parts these days.

Word on the street is that Trollo Angel has finally been banned.

I expect we will see a new version of this AEG puppet shortly coming from one of his other ISPs.

Textures still flash with ATI however.
Shimmering?

No, this was actual textures flashing on screen because of incompatibility with Crossfire. Hopefully these new drivers fix this issue.
