Oblivion Freezes Randomly :(

I have a problem with Oblivion. It will randomly freeze. It could be 30 minutes or 3 hours, it will freeze with music still playing, then it will stop and the system is unresponsive. I hit the reset button and sometimes the bios locks up @ the Ram Test Screen.

I think its my PSU..

Shuttle SN45G
Geforce 6600 GT
1.5 gigs of ram
2 harddrives
NO DVD DRIVE (using no cd patch I had to do a network installation)

I had the same damn problem. It was killing me, and I did quite a bit of research to find out the culprit.

Check your application event log. Mine was freezing on a file that led me to believe some codec packs I had installed were screwing with the game. I uninstalled all codec packs, and restarted Oblivion, and I no longer have the problem. Oblivion always crashes me to the desktop anyway still ... but at least I can play.

what sound card do you have? mine gave me tons of issues in general (old SB live!) and had to pull it out.. new card works perfectly (with some exceptions because it is so old)

Stock nforce 2 sound, the log didn't find much, I also have crashes to desktop.. I guess I'll try to find out if codecs are the problem, but how could that be it?

I believe Oblivion uses mp3s for the background music. There was a thread on another forum about FFDShow setting itself as the default mp3 codec. If you use FFDShow, try going into the configuration and disabling mp3 decoding.
