I have built a very stable overclocked system around the AMD Duron processor and the VIA KT133 chipset. Not that this is any huge accomplishment, but I wanted to share my experience with others in the hopes that they might benefit from it. My system is as follows:
-Case: Antec KS282 w/ mods
-Power Supply: Antec PP303X
-Operating System: Windows NT 4.0 Workstation w/ all service packs, hotfixes & patches
-Motherboard: MSI K7T Pro2-A
-CPU: Duron 650MHz @ 872MHz (8x mult * 109MHz FSB)
-HeatSinkFan: Thermaltake Chrome Orb
-Idle: 37 deg -Stress: 41 deg
-RAM: 3 x 128MB PC-133 Mushkin w/ Infineon chips
-Graphics: 3dfx VooDoo 3 1000 16MB (OEM)
-Hard Drives: 2 x IBM 75GXP 15GB (ATA100, 7200rpm, 2.0MB buffer)
-CD-ROM: Teac 48x IDE
-Controller: Adaptec 2930U SCSI (PCI SLOT 4)
-ZIP Drive: Iomega 100MB SCSI int
-CD-R/W: Yamaha 8824SZ SCSI int
-NIC: NetGear FA310 (PCI SLOT 6)
-Floppy Drive: 1.44 MB Teac
===========================
-BIOS Setup-
I am running the latest overclocker's BIOS from MSI. My setting are what one would expect, Vcpu is 1.80v, Vio is default, CAS is 3, RAM clock freq is 133MHz, etc.
-Modifications I have made-
I cut the fan grills out of the front and rear of the case and mounted two Sunon 80mm low-noise fans for intake and exhaust. Front intake fan is covered by an anti-static dryer sheet to prevent dust and hair infiltration (3 cats and 1 dog).
On the motherboard, I removed the factory heatsink from the northbridge and added a blue ORB in its place. It is mounted with frag tape.
-Future Upgrades-
The duron CPU I have is a very early model and I expect I can O/C it more. Thus, I am going to push the 1GHz barrier by switching to an IWILL KK266 mobo based on the VIA KT133A chipset, and replace the CHORB with a Taisol heatsink/fan unit. I am also planning on replacing the 3dfx graphics card with an ATI Radeon LE
-Primary Use of System-
This is not a gaming rig. It's high-end use is running model simulations so CPU power is key. I also multitask heavily, hence the 384MB of RAM (though ( am thinking of selling that all off and replacing with 2 x 256MB of Mushkin REV 1.5 or 2). I do have a budget and plan on getting a new 266 T-Bird at some point, but I want to 'exhaust' my current Duron first.
I hope this helps others...
