Hey everyone...I built my new rig a couple of days ago and I'm trying to hit 2.8ghz prime-stable on it. No such luck.

Well, I did the "quick and dirty" overclock and tested the limits for each component.

Max FSB (or whatever the correct term is): 328mhz or 311mhz @ 95%

Max RAM: 245mhz or 232 @ 95%

Now, here is the problem. I tried to find my max CPU stability (ran Prime95 for 5 minutes a test) and I could only run it at 253mhz with a x11 mulitplier (equals 2.783ghz cpu). I ran it one time at 255mhz with x11 multi for 5 minutes; anything over that fails within 10 seconds.

I tried to run the comp at the following settings but the mobo didn't even want to let me past the BIOS until I lowered the FSB:

300 with x9 multi (reset FSB warning)
280 with x9.5 multi (reset FSB warning)
275 with x10 multi (booted, but failed prime95 in 32minutes)
271 with x10 multi (ran prime95 for over 12 hours perfect and I turned it off)

In 3dMark03-5-and 6, it states that my max internal clock should be 3.0ghz, but I can't get a higher FSB than 275 with a good boot. I want to run a lower multi (8.5-9.5 atleast). Is this normal with this setup or am I doing something wrong?? Also, is my CPU voltage too high? 1.5volts for the 271mhz with x10 multi.

PSU: Antec TruePower 2.0 550watts
MOBO: Epox 9npa+Ultra
RAM: 2x512 OCZ Value
CPU: Opty 148 (38C @2.710ghz after 14+hours of Prime95)
GPU: eVGA 7900GT CO Superclock @ 572x1788mhz (53C on load)
CASE: Nemesis NZXT (3x120mms)
Running with an XP-90 with 90mm panaflo

Current specs:
271mhz FSB with x10 multi
RAM running at 166 divider (225mhz with x4 HT) 2.5-4-3-7 1T

Sorry for the long post and thanks for reading!!

Well, that's exactly what I've been doing for about 24 hours straight, but I'm getting no luck with anything. I'm really wondering about the CPU voltage being @ 1.5 volts...everyone else seems to be at 1.45 and oc'ing higher with the same setups (mobo/ram/cpu).

just because everyone else is doesn't mean you're going to be able to as well.

have you tried using a lower divider like 150 or 133? i see you're using value ram and it's impressive you can even get it up to 225. i'd try to eliminate the memory first.

also, try increasing the vcore from 1.45 to 1.5. that might give you the necessary stability.

I know that I shouldn't compare to others because CPU's are all different even from the same production line, but I figure I should get 2.8ghz though...I'm running 2.71ghz at 1.5 volts right now. I tried running 2.75 at 1.5 volts, but no go; got a fault after 30 minutes of prime95. I know 90mhz isn't much, but it's just nice to know that you can; ya' know

The problem with the RAM dividers: My Epox board doesn't show odd dividers like 150 or 180, just the usual 166/133/100 methods...so this makes things a little narrow on the mem side.

I might try 2.73ghz (273 at x10 multi), but I'm pretty sure that is going to be my ultimate max setting

For goodness sakes, just put your ram lower, it doesnnnnt matter. Put it at 100 and you wont be able to tell the difference in general usage. I bet you 10000000 dollars.

My friend had his ram on 1/2 dividers. It would literally take him 5 minutes to shut down windows lol.

Wow, 5 minutes to shut down windows 8o
That's crazyiness!!!

Anyways, I haven't tried 1.55 volts, but I'm betting it will be around 43C
I tried at 1.52 and it hit about 39C, but I couldn't run it long without Prime95 failing...maybe like 2 minutes. Thanks for the input guys!!

did you try a lower mem divider?

if you don't want to try this...

if you want higher speed, then what you do is use the 9x mult and a HTT of 311 or 312. that'll bring up your mem speed some.

try that.

Dang, trouble hitting 2.8 with an Opteron 148? Makes me glad I went for the 144 instead. I'm sure it's probably something small holding you back. It always is....
