Odd that Anand says the 'Platinum Revision 2' RAM stands head and shoulders above the others. How does that foot taste?

That was Wesley Fink that wrote those words, not Anand. And he was talking about performance, not quality. It seems to me OCZ has often sacrificed quality for performance.

I'm one of the biggest OCZ haters here, but I can't say that this is good news for the company. Ryan built that company from the ground up, and he's poured his heart and soul into it for years. He's taken a ton of heat over the years from us because he couldn't hang with intel/samsung/etc and their $$ billions. Hopefully, they end up selling to Seagate and he gets a humongous payday. If not, then OCZ will flounder indefinitely and likely go bankrupt.

His annual compensation was like $1MM and even after recent his recent sales of OCZ stock, he probably still owns close to ~4% of the company, which is roughly $10MM today. Don't worry about him.

I was building Z-80 machines in the 70's.

OCZ was and is garbage, and I believe even Anand said so. I don't know if the site goes back that far. Maybe I'll take a look-see.

They were a joke, and used marketing to make kids think they were cool and elite.

I noticed in your post you said nothing about reliability. Their SSD's are fast too. They just happen to be fast crap.

OCZ did put out good products in a small garage-like operation before they became more like one of the big boys corporate style and ramped up their production and could not maintain the usual quality. Later on the big criticism which I shared about their memory was that they misled consumers about their 'manufacturing facility' which was more like a warehouse which they slapped on their own labels.

These stories are pretty awesome. Sounds like the guy was an enthusiast just like us, but turned his passion into a big business. Props to him. Hope he finds another path after OCZ.

He was an enthusiast like myself and was able to transition to a big business model. I was his original source for the Athlons under Trinitymicro that he modded based on the work I was doing at the time. He started at Northwind, which was just a small shop in Boise, but was able to startup OZC which became huge. Definitely a success story.

Maybe you are too young to have built Athlon 64 builds? Those OCZ plat rev 2 were the BEST RAM you could get back in the day. The TCCD modules (which were most of the plat rev 2s) could OC very well, and had crazy timings for the day. You could hit 2-2-2 1T at 400mhz+, which was pretty much impossible on any other modules then. They were pretty affordable too.

The VX gold memory was also VERY fast, and would take insane voltage levels.

OCZ had some awesome stuff back in the old days when it was a tweakers company.

Best RAM ? Sure Ill give you that. They OC the highest and had great timings. BEST RAM as far as longevity goes ? No, but thats just me, I had 6 sticks of that stuff and all of them died...Id rather take RAM that is second best if it means it will last for several years vs 1 year [it doesn't help that their reputation with SSD's today is no better].

In OCZ's favor they did give me $150 when I asked for a RMA and they were out of stock, $150 was what I paid for a year prior but they weren't worth that when I RMA'd. THAT made me like the company, I have no ill will towards them at all.

Never understood all the OCZ hate. I have a ton of stuff from them running 24/7 for the past couple of years (DDR2, DDR3, StealthXstream PSUs, crapton of Vertex 2 and Agility 3 SSDs).

I find it hard to believe those who are saying that OCZ products have always been crap are old enough to remember what OCZ was doing in the Slot-A Athlon days.

I do, and I seem to remember a "minor" debacle OCZ suffered after it was discovered they were binning memory IC's to see which overclocked well, then remarking the IC's as being that speed.

Vertex 4s are nice. I have several of them running 24/7 no issues. I never had OCZ flash drives before, maybe all the bad history is in the past (Sandforce)
