I have an odd problem with WinXP-Pro and thumbnails. Not sure what happened or how but thumbnails now appear grayed out.
See It Here

When clicked, the photos open and appear normal. The problem is the same in all folders and all drive partitions. Anyone else ever see this or know how to fix it? I have tried resetting the folder options but no luck.

Display is set to 32 bit.

Thanks,

Did you install any imaging software? I know sometimes other image programs try to take over the thumbnail display processing. Looks like the contrast or brightness or something is set wrong when generating the thumbs.

Thanks for the reply.

I loaded a the trail version of Blaze Media Pro last week and then unloaded it. I can't say that it happened right but I am pretty sure I would have noticed it very soon after the install if that were the cause. Another oddity is that some jpg thumbs, in the same folder with many others, will show clear while the rest are grey. I also checked the properties of those that look fine and those that are grayed out and they are all the same - true color. My main viewer\editor is ACDSee and all photos look fine once opened. It's got to have something to do with the properties that I am not seeing.

This one has me puzzled....

***EDIT***
I noticed that the thumbs that show clear are images that I have worked on or updated and saved during the past week - after whatever it was that screwed up, screwed up. Preliminary conclusion: Editing the image restores whatever was missing. I only have 1,000+ files left to edit and re-save. :-(((((

Thanks,

The other thing you can try is unhiding and deleting all the Thumbs.db files. Then, when you open the folders, XP will have to recreate the thumbnail file and may fix your issue.

Right click and check their properties, I bet they're attributes
are set to hidden

Tried the attributes - all are set to Archive. Also searched for thumbs.db and deleted all of them. Then went back to my folders and the problem was still the same. One odd thing.. once I edit and save one of the photos the thumb looks fine. I had installed Blaze Media Pro but removed it. I am not sure if my thumbs went to crap then or not. I have also clicked the restore option for my folders but no luck. This is nuts....

I don't think deleting the thumbs.db does it 100%. Once I saw a similiar problem. There were several folders with pictures. For whatever reason one folder would generate an error when showing thumb nails. I renamed the folder and there was no trouble but when I named it the original name there was alway an error. Maybe thumb information is stored in the registry somewhere?

Thanks!

I got it... well, sort of. While in the folder with the thumbs view set, I pulled down the Edit menu and hit "Select All." With the right mouse button I then noticed an option to refresh thumbnails. I hit it and it worked. Can't get the same effect on the files just by selecting the folder alone, I have to open the folder and then select all files in that folder. It works and the setting sticks but it will take a while to go through all the folders in my computer to get it done.

I'm writing this one down... what a pain.

Thanks everyone.

Under tools, folder options, view
There's a Do not cache thumbnails option, try clicking that and applying to all folders.
open up the other folders and it might rebuild the thumbnails. the go back into the folder options and uncheck the do not cache, and apply to all folders.

Does it work?
