Odd X2 problem

I changed out my 146 with a 185 and everything worked great, except for one thing.
That is after a half hour or so of playing BF2142 I would lose the video output.I could still hear the audio but the monitor would be out.
Seemed like my video card might have been OC to much so I set it to defaults, even though I had been using it that way for a year.
Didn't help.
Then I thought my antec 550 PS might be to weak.So to check it out I pulled the X2 out and put it in my old system, which is running on a antec 450.
Now no problems in the old system I can play BF2142 for hours.
New
146
Epox 9npa+
2 gig (2x1gig)
7900gt
XPpro

Old
185
Asus A8V
1 gig (2x512)
6800gt
XPpro

Also the X2 ran 10c cooler in new system.Tested with prime95 and 3dmark06.
Anyone hear of anything like this?

That's the type of thing that happens when you don't reload Windows, after moving from a single core to a dual core. If you know how, it's possible to do it without reloading Windows, but it's really more of a pain in the butt than just reloading Windows.

edit: You should also update the BIOS on that Epox, while you have the single core in it.

Ya could be I'll have to do that but I was able to put it in the machine without reloading windows.
I did install the AMD duel core software on both.
The Epox does have latest bios, should be duel core ready.
Should be?

Yeah, your motherboard is capable of running dual-cores, as long as it has one of the later BIOS's. BTW, which driver are you using with that 7900GT, and what operating system is that computer running?

I'm running the 93.81 drivers with XP pro.I'm not sure which ones I'm using on the 6800gt,one of the 86.xxs I think.

Hmm, it shouldn't be the video drivers, then. I thought maybe you were using one of the newest drivers. How sure are you that the cpu wasn't overheating, or that the extra heat from the dual-core chip wasn't helping your video card overheat? In the OP, you said that the X2 is running ~10C cooler in the other system. What temps was it running in the Epox-based system?

OK the cooling breaks down like this.
I have a ninja tower on the Epox and a Zalman on the Asus.
When I first installed the X2 on the Epox close to 40c idle and over 50c prime95.I moved the 120mm fan from it's normal position so that was blowing half across the fins and half a long the base-that dropped it 10c.
On the Asus it is running about 43c idle and high 50s working.
Using "Epox thunder probe" and "Asus probe" to check temps.
Have VGA cooler on 7900gt and the monitor in nvidia control panel says that 46c is about as high as it gets.
I guess it's possible that I do have a PS problem. The Asus is running on a 100w less but there is nothing else on the MB.Where as the Epox has X-FI audio and Hauppauge TV decoder.
It would have been smart to pull that stuff out for testing before I moved the CPU.

Well, it isn't a cooling problem. That leaves the psu and the Hauppauge card. Have you checked for an updated driver for the Hauppauge? It's possible that (although I don't know enough about TV tuner cards to know for sure) maybe having the extra core is messing with the card somehow. BTW, have you installed the AMD dual-core optimizer, along with the driver? If so, you might want to also install the Windoze AMD dual-core hotfix. It's filename is WindowsXP-KB896256-v3-x86-ENU.exe. Just copy and paste that into Google, and you can find the download. Installing it helped me, maybe it will help you.

Haven't installed the hotfix.I do have latest drivers for TV tuner.I hope that isn't it because being able to record TV while doing other stuff is why I got the duelcore.
I guess the first thing I have to do is put the X2 back on the Epox.More troubleshooting needed.

Installed hotfix and removed sound and tuner cards. No problems.
Reinstalled tuner and everything is still OK.
I think I'll leave the sound card out for awhile just to make sure.
Thanks for the help myocardia.

yeah i was guessing on the sound card as well since its a game related issue.

As for the temp issue, you try to blow out the fins with compressed air? They tend to be a safe haven for uber amounts of dust bunnies. Back when i was on air a very long time ago, i would neeed to blow it out at least once every two months if you have carpet.

Not a problem. Which sound card do you have? The reason I ask is because Creative finally has a new XP driver for the Audigy and Audigy 2's, that is supposed to solve quite a few problems, including the scratchiness that some people complained about with the original Audigy's. It might help your problem, also, if you've got an Audigy or Audigy 2.

Of course, it might just have been a sound setting that BF2142 defaulted to for your card, that the card didn't really like. If you decide to reinstall it, try forcing the game to use software sounds-- even though the card can do hardware, it hardly makes any difference in performance.

I have the X-FI platinum.
As a matter of fact BF2142 always defaulted to software.IF I tried to choose X-FI sound it would try to tell me that I didn't have the hardware so I would just run it with generic hardware sound.
I'm gonna be away for a week but I will try to reinstall when I get back.
