In other news, Mark Teixeira has turned on beast mode

[...]

Also I may even move him up over Eddie Murray and Alomar on my switch hitter all time ranking if he keeps it up.

WHOA! Somebody is forgetting a certain Mr. Mickey Mantle.

And I'd also put Pete Rose ahead of Murray or Alomar.

Nah, my list is:

1) Mantle
2) Chipper
3) Rose
4)/4a) Murry and Alomar
5) Berkman
6) Tex

Tex will need around 4-5 more great years to crack that top 3. Hell, Berkman has an outside shot as well with the way he's been playing.

Shane first player in the bigs to record a quadruple double this year -- double figures in doubles, triples, home runs and stolen bases.

This puts him in some great Phillies company: Jimmy Rollins (five times), Juan Samuel (four times), Dick Allen (three times), Bobby Abreu (two times), Mike Schmidt, Bake McBride and Johnny Callison.

Anyone surprised at Dick Allen being on that list? You shouldn't be. Anyway, the old Connie Mack Stadium, which preceded the old Vet and was located in scenic North Philly, was something of a triples haven. In the sixties, guys like Tony Gonzalez, Tony Taylor, Callison, Allen and others all regularly hit 10 or more triples in a season.

I also like to tip my cap to Bake McBride, a base-stealing, lifetime .299 hitter who was a vastly underrated, gold glove caliber defender on a team chock full of gold glove winners -- in various years, Bob Boone at catcher, Larry Bowa at SS, Manny Trillo at 2nd, Mike Schmidt at 3rd (9 in a row, 10 overall), and the Secretary of Defense, Garry Maddox in center (7 in a row, 8 overall).

Harry Kalas said of Maddox, ""Two-thirds of the Earth is covered by water, the other one-third is covered by Garry Maddox."

Bowa only won two, but that's only because he regularly finished a very close second to Dave Concepcion, who was a tad "flashier."

Manny Trillo (3 GG's ) had THE BEST arm I have ever seen on any second baseman, ever.

Bob Boone won 7 gold gloves, but only two before he was traded away by the Phillies.

Talk about being strong up the middle!

Wow, nice quote from Harry the K. I also didn't know Maddox's nick was Secretary of Defense, awesome.

Juan Samuel! Would have never guessed him (or Allen). He had geri curls like they were going outta style.

Actually, Samuel is the first former Philly I would have guessed. With his speed and power and position (2nd base), he'd be a fantasy league all-star if he played now.

Samuel became the first player in Major League history to reach double-figures in home runs, triples, doubles and stolen bases in each of his first four seasons.

He led the league in triples twice, in 1984 (19) and 1987 (15).

Best Year 1987: .272/.335/.502, 28 HR, 100 RBI, 113 R, 35 SB

I probably would have guessed Von Hayes. J/k!

Nah probably Rollins, Dykstra, Rose, Schmidt, Abreau, Eisenreich...

Howard just went yard against the Rockies, another beastly blast just left of center. That's 4 ribbies on a 2 run double and a 2 run dinger today for "I'm not cryin" Ryan, giving him the NL lead in RBI.

It certainly has high entertainment value, as did the whole game, but I'm not sure that's the kind of stuff MLB wants to promote. Oh well.

What is your take on the trade that brought your Tigers Doug Fister? I am an M's fan, and really liked Fister. However, at the time of the trade I thought it was okay as the M's need offense in the worst way.

Watching the M's vs. A's right now, Furbush pitched 5 solid innings, only allowing one run and had a perfect game through 4. Casper Wells has an RBI today so far, giving him 4 RBI's in 4 games.

Don't let Fister's record fool you, with even an average offense he could have 10 wins by now. Plus, he has a great attitude and mental makeup on the mound from what I can see.

Best of luck to your Tigers.

I liked the trade. Looking forward to seeing Fister tonight. He's the type of guy I thought we needed, a solid #3/#4 starter. Love the fact that he's cost controlled and not eligible for arbitration until 2014 or 2015, I forget. And the same is true of Pauley, who I also like.

As for what the Mariners got...I like them all, but I don't think any of them will be stars. Martinez has the highest ceiling, but it's highly unlikely that he can stick at 3rd base, and that will hurt his value. He's also almost entirely prospect with no production in AA so far, although he's very young for his age.

Casper's a hard guy not to like, and he's definitely the only one that I would really consider major-league ready. He can play all 3 outfield positions and has a bit of power. I don't think he'll ever be an All-Star or anything, but he's a solid fourth outfielder at worst, and in that current Mariners lineup I'm sure he looks great (no offense). I hope he can stick in Seattle, he was kind of a fan favorite here since he's a Michigan native and is a real likeable guy.

I think Furbush will end up in a middle-relief/spot starter role. He came up real quickly through the minors out of nowhere about a year ago, but I'm sure he has the stuff to really start up here. Nice line today, but we'll see how he does against lineups better than Oakland. I think he needs some time to AAA to develop a bit more.

The PTBNL is reportedly Chance Ruffin, a pretty good prospect but a guy whose ceiling is probably as a closer. Drafted him last year but he has a pretty major-league ready arm.

Anyways, I think it was a good trade for both clubs and I think Fister and Pauley will be more than enough to win the AL Central. The fact that our rotation is pretty much set for the next 3 years now is awesome, and I love the fact that Fister is probably the worst pitcher of the bunch (in a good way).

Light 'em up Lidge closing out of necessity and 2/3rds of the way there in ninth, Grid willing.

And he got his 100th save as a Phillie! No offense, Brad, but I hope that's your last and that you henceforth become extremely well acquainted with the 7th inning.

Fixed that for you... He sure is painful to watch pitch now. All sliders with an incredible fastball.

Fister received the lowest run support in the AL of all starting pitchers. And we know what that can do to a pitcher, it adds a lot of stress and mental fatigue.

Are you watching the Tigers game now? Let me know what you think of Fisters outing. Would love to see the Rangers get "Fisted" by Doug!

You can make a lot of interesting signs with Doug's last name....

I just got home and didn't get to watch, although I caught some on the radio. Can't ask for much more than 7IP/2ER against the Rangers.

All I remember is that he was a short-lived swing man who sucked at both starting and relieving.

Yep! But remember that one good game he had, a complete game shutout against the Dodgers that year?

Kyle Kendrick.

I shouldn't be so hard on KK, though. He has actually been better than not as a #5 in his career.

Yep, another quality start for the Fisther. I think he left with the scored tied, so he won't be eligible for the W, but that is par for the course with Doug. A quality start with either a L or ND to show for it.

Nope, he'll get the win if Valverde closes this out. And he'll probably be doing a jig in the locker room celebrating his whopping 5 runs of support.

Rangers 2-12 in Comerica over their last 14 games now. Weird.

edit: the Fister wins!

Good for Fister, it must be so frustrating to pitch quality start after quality start and get nothing but L's or ND's. Plus, anytime a player goes to a new team they want to make a good first impression.

FYI: Link to an M's commercial with Fister in it, poking fun at baseball player superstitions. The last few seconds when they flash to Fister about to barf cracks me up everytime.

The great news about the Howard HR is that it was his first off a left since last September. Just call him Mr. 2nd Half.

By the way, the Baseball Tonight piece on Granderson reaching out to that family was amazing. It's good to know that people out there like Granderson can make a difference to people he never even knew and honor the Tigers fan who idolized him but was gunned down at Virginia Tech. RIP

Must see stuff if you are a baseball fan or not:

The world needs more people like CG.

Troll? You call him Light 'em Up Lidge... You gotta admit he's not the same pitcher he was in '08. If being a realist makes me a troll, so be it.

Not so much at all for that post, but the cumulative bent of several of your recent posts, like "Phillies suck" right after John Mayberry hit his 2 out, 2 strike, 9th inning HR. I thought you were a fan. WTF was that about?
