Also, Intel says *DO NOT INSTALL* the processor in a mainboard without it first installed in the case as the motherboard will most likely bend from the pressure of the stock retail HSF, the mounted mainboard will not bend since it's secured.... probably won't ruin the mobo but it's only going to flex so far before a trace breaks

Someone should probably tell Asus since the "Quick Setup Guide" says to install the memory, CPU and drive cables before putting the board in the case. That'll teach me to follow directions.

I was lucky at least, but I wonder if maybe some of the problems people are having relate to overbending??

wanted to know what settings in the BIOS do I need to set to move the RAM down to DDR333 speeds so this mobo will be stable using the Corsair memory for XP PRO OS loading and general use?

I have that exact combo myself. I'm running my Corsair at 2-2-2-5-1T @ 166mhz. I've had it for about a week now and it's been rock solid. However even if I back the ram timing way down, it won't even post at the 200 mhz(ddr400) setting. I may just sell this board (been a die hard Asus fan forever) and try that new Gigabyte.

Just talked to a friend and he's sending me a 648 board that looks VERY promising! It's the Gigabyte 8SG667! Anand has a review and so far from what i was told, the board is the best 648 so far! Giga Byte actually goes out on a limb and says it SUPPORTS DDR-400 and he is running 3 STICKS of Samsung in it as we speak! I shall know soon as he is getting me one and sending it but if you are thinking 648, but unsure, you may want to hold out until next week when most online resellers say they will have it in stock!

Hi Elvis2,

A question.... When you mentioned:

Corsair at 2-2-2-5-1T @ 166mhz

I finally have all the components and XP is installed. Figured out how to set the memory speed to 166Mhz - that's easy. In the BIOS under Chip Configuration I was using "By SPD" using memory defaults. If I want to tune it to what you have above I change?:

SDRAM CAS Latency: 2T
SDRAM RAS to CAS Latency: 2T
SDRAM RAS Precharge Time: 2T
SDRAM RAS Active Time: 5T

That's what I am guessing based on you numbers above. However - where does the last "1T" come from in your config? The next item in the menu is "Chipset Clock Mode" which is set to "Synchronous" right now - there is no option for 1T in that selection. Where is the 1T at? Should I config "Chipset Clock Mode" to Asynchronous?

Want to optimize this the best I can - never done this before...

Set your CHIPSET CLOCK MODE to performance and right below it is: SDRAM COMMAND LEAD OFF. Set that to 1T.

Btw, have you got that thing to run @200 mhz?

Anyone else having a problem with the LAN? It's fine for surfing but when I get into some serious online racing with my league on a dedicated server, I get lockups and boots . Never happended before with my Athlon rig and Linksys nic.

I've been a big Asus fan but this things outta here tomorrow. My Gigabyte's on the way. 'Nuff of this nonsense.

I've asked this question on threads I have started but no one gave an answer, so I thought I would post it here. Do all three DIMM slots on the p4s8x accept Double sided DDR Ram? I know on the 845G and E Chipsets made by intel you could only use two Double Sided DDR (no matter the number of DIMM slots) because of the way the chipset handed memory. I am not completely comfortable with all the Motherboard Jargon but it had something to do with "slot 1 uses banks 1 & 2 when Double sided DDR is used...." I know three DIMM banks are available on the p4s8x, i want to know if double sided RAM can be used in all of them.

Whoa - it didn't like that.... I setup the advanced chip configuration as I described with the details you added.

System came up and blue screen saying that "windows has shutdown to avoid damaging your computer".

Is there something that I missed?

Someone at Asusboards Forums claims to have word from Corsair and Asus that a forthcoming bios release will fix the DDR400 issue.
After talking with someone at Corsair about the issue, I discovered that ASUS has actually identified the problem and had come to Corsair for some assistance and continued testing. A bios patch is definitely needed and will not run the DDR400 STABLY at this time. I have every confidence after speaking with Corsair that ASUS will address the issue probably within the next week and that the Corsair ram they are USING TO DO THE TESTING will also work with the P4S8X. ASUS is usually pretty good about fixing issues as quickly as possible however the bios developer is at some conference until tomorrow (inLA) so they will address it Wednesday and hopefully have some testing done by the end of the week if not the beginning of next week.
