Yes. I hope that you have uninstalled the drives from the device manager as part of each troubleshooting attempt. They will NOT automatically switch to DMA mode from PIO mode, when you find the fix.

If this last attempt doesn't solve the problem, I would strongly suggest you get another drive somehow, to see what happens. I still think it's quite unlikely an issue with your mobo.

cable select jumper ...... and still the same thing. When the computer first boots up into windows the drive is set to its proper setting. But as soon as i put a disk in it it switches to PIO.......... ill try another optical disk next.

That says a lot, right there. It's switching to PIO as a result of a disc error. Something must be wrong with the drive. I think the only way to confirm this for sure is to test with another drive.

I would think quite unlikely, which is why the need to test with another drive.

Can you describe exactly how you have ALL your drives installed. List the type of drive and where it's connected. Also, did you install the chipset drivers for the mobo?

yes chipset drivers have been installed everytime.

I just tested out one of my older drives........... and guess what same thing, soon as i put a cd i get lag computer slows down, lags a bit and then when it finally recognizes the disc i check device manager and it has changed to PIO mode from DMA.

So i am guessin its probably the motherboard....... atleast from what i can gather.

Wow. What a bitch of a problem. Are your Optical drives connected to the native IDE port or the JMicron port?

I've never heard of this being the fault of the motherboard. I'm not enough of an expert to rule it out completely, though. How do you have your BIOS setup? Is SATA set to Standard IDE, AHCI, or RAID?

If Standard IDE, what is the Onboard IDE Operate Mode set to? Enhanced Mode or Combined Mode?

Ok, a bunch of stupid questions that I have to ask:

1- has this problem been happening with different media, or are you always testing with the same disc?

2- did you test each drive alone, set as master?

3- are your drives set to the correct region?

4- are you using SATA or PATA HDs, or both?

5- is your PSU sufficient?

6- are all your drives (HD and optical) properly detected in the BIOS?

7- what are your optical drive models (maybe they need a firmware upgrade to work properly on this mobo)

I can't think of anything else. Very close to being stumped, but I love a good challenge.

Hi,

Is it possible that the FSB threshold of this board will be raised with subsequent bios or does the board have too many limitations elsewhere?

Kabaala.

1. ive used blank discs (to test burning), the p5w disc, game discs, windows disc etc etc. As soon as it detects a disc in there i get some slowdown and then bam im in PIO mode again.

2. yes....... and yes

3. I didnt check but probably

4. 1 Sata drive Seagate 320gb 7200.10

5. 450w OCZ modstream ...... more than enough for 2 disk drives 1 hdd a 7600gt and e6600

6. yes

7. ummmmm i updated my Lite on drives firmware, and the lg drie is model GDR 8164b

I am fresh out of ideas, for the moment. You might want to do some google searching about his problem with the specific drive models. See if there are any known issues with your drives and the P5W DH/975X.

Having checked-out a few other forums, I have seen many people having these PIO mode issues with ROM drives and the JMicron controller. I know you said you are using the native IDE controller, but maybe disabling the JMicron controller in the BIOS would help. Assuming you haven't already done that.

I tried that as well, actually it was one of the first things i did.

Infact i didnt even install the Jmicron controller the first go around and id still get the same crappy performence.

And when i did install it i turned it off in the bios just to make sure and...... we know how the story goes lol.

I am thinkin about going the Nvidia route, always have had good experiences with them.

Just gotta wait it out for the 590 series to come out.

Again Phil, appreciate the help.

I think going nvidia would be a mistake. If you want to overclock intel chipset is the way to, or wait for ATI's RD600. In any case, I'm still not convinced that this problem is being caused by something we have overlooked. This is just not one of the problems that people are having with the P5W DH. I have two SATA and 2 PATA hooked-up and everything is running great. This PIO mode problem is first and foremost and problem with XP. There's also a chance you have drives that don't want to play nice with the 975X chipset, I just don't know. Both my DVD drives are late models, purchased within the last 3 months. If you really can't stand the idea of replacing it with another P5W DH, go for the P5B Deluxe.

You'll be fine. The boot issues with OCZ mem affect only P965 based boards, not 975X boards, like the P5W DH. When you first boot, go into the BIOS and set Jumperfree to manual. A bunch of items will be unlocked. You'll be able to adjust the mem speed to whatever it should be, and set the voltage to 2.0, not 2.1. Gold likes 2.0 at 800, it's the Platinums that like 2.1.

What CPU are you going to be using? If it's a conroe, the only potential issue could be the BIOS version. You need 0701 minimum just to post.

Hi

my CPU is a conroe E6400

the bios on the mobo is 0801, so it should be fine

if everything is stable, should i flash it to 1201 or keep it to 0801

1 more thing
ok i will have to set manually 2.0v in the bios (what is the default, 1.9v ?, i didnt see that in the spec)

do i have to set something else manually in the bios (like timing speed 5-5-5-12?)

thanks you for the help

Yes, you will have to manually set the memory speed, voltage and timings.

To set the speed and voltage, you set Jumperfree to manuals (see my above reply). For the mem you will enter the Chipset Setup area and disable SPD. That will unlock a bunch of settings for the mem, including the timings. For your mem you'll use 5-5-5-15 when operating at 800MHz.

I'm not sure what the default mem voltage is, but that's irrelevent since you'll be setting it manually.
