Sounds like they need to retire some old servers.
Anyone have info on the D3 environment?
While I have no specifics for Diablo 3, I do have some information regarding WoW servers.
To main*tain the server side of WoW, Bliz*zard requires:
• 20,000 computers
• 1.3 pita-bytes of storage
• 75,000 CPU cores
There is however no specific information revealed about the hardware its self. I guess from there, we only assume the server tech behind Diablo 3, and Starcraft 2.
Be wary though. 250 dps is a massive difference, especially after you factor in the Dex damage bonus. Which I wouldnt be surprised he was near 1500+%.
at 1500% that 200 dps becomes, 3700+ Dps loss. He would have to calculate (or just socket an item like that and equip it) how much that loss in dps and gain in crit damage would actually do to his overall dps.
I would still give nods to the rare item with +base stats/open socket, 850-900'ish dps unless his magic bow has a good bit of vit/dex on it.
I am just speculating on a plain jane magic bow vs a bow with decent high dmg plus added benefit of additional stats and socket.
I was just speculating how much dps out of a weapon is worth the best gem to place into it, as 250 dps on a weapon is pretty significant. And weapons that high in dps wont be plain jane as it had to use a %damge or +min/max damage affix to make it that high.
To me, a weapon that only has a damage modifier on it and nothing else is plain. I was also thinking the comparison was for a normal (blue) drop.
I see quite a few people going gaga over a high dps weapon with no other stats and then become irate when they find out their overall damage output is lower.

well.... i spent 4 mill in a bow (1050 dps) with 150-180 dext and a socket with a 80% emerald gem... it was easily a 5k dps upgrade and impale started criting (with the 100% crit damage rune) for 350k sometimes.
im at 80k dps without sharshooter (i think)... it goes to 150k with it.
a friend suggested me to drop SS and go for Shadow Power + Gloom. It definetly works when tring to kill reflect damage elites, but i lost way too much mobility... im trying to get used to my new setup of skills
Passives:
Archery, Sharshooter, the one that gives more damage when you are not close
1) Shadow Power + Gloom
2) SS with 30% movement speed, but it sucks. I used to have Vault, but that invulnerability is DAMN handy sometimes, when you get jailed or stuck in a wall... cant play without it
3) preparation with 30% chance of not cooldown
4) Impale
mouse 1: Evasive fire with the 3 hit rune (i used to have hungering arrow with 70% more damage, cant decide which one to keep)
mouse 2: Nether tentacles or ball lightning, cant decide which one to keep
i still get crushed in act3... the game fucking knows what class im using, why so many invulnerabl/shielding/reflect damage elites? every fucking pack has 1 of those skills...

The delta between A3 and A4 is much less than that of A1 to A2 and still less than A2 to A3 imo.
Well that is because of 2 possibilities. 1) add enough STR/Dex/Int and it can compensate some of that dps. 2) Damage done, not dps. Some classes like wizard and DH cannot just shoot things to hearts content, so sometimes a harder hitting but slower weapon (same or less dps) is better for them.
Normally a crit damage gem is a good thing to add, only if the DPS is within 100 dps or better of the other weapon and the stats are about equivalent.
i tried doing the beginning of act4 alone as DH... the 1st enemy, that mini boss, is fucking impossible...those shadow fiends or whatever they are called 1 shoot me and they come endlessly :S
takes a few minutes to fill out initially, but very useful prior to making AH buys

this will at least give you an idea of the displayed DPS. As far as the situation mentioned here, that's more dependent on class and play style as mentioned
