Damn I have barely done any of the main quest yet. I just like going and finding dungeons and taking out whatever big bastards I can find in the open world. Uchigatana with sheathe attack is a madman in boss fights.
Same here, I keep riding around on the horse and exploring. No matter where I go there is some immeninent death awaiting haha.

I haven't done any part of the main quest because I don't feel ready at all.

I did end up going to this well and took an elevator down that took like 45 seconds to reach the bottom of what looked like a complete different map.

I quickly took it back up right away because there was no way in hell I should have been in that place at my level.

If it's the mine I'm thinking of it's not too bad if you have leveled up your weapon a bit and gotten a couple of extra flasks. Though every elevator make sure to be on the lookout for areas to jump off onto when you're riding it, can find some decent loot that way.

I always hate horses in open world games like this. Especially in something that's pretty densely populated with stuff to do like this game is. I always walk and look for cover to size up enemies and see how I want to attack (or evade) first. I don't want to rush through any of these areas and miss a bossfight or an interesting dungeon, which is what using the horse always feels like in open world games. Only open world game I ever used a horse much is RDR2 since there is so much empty space between areas on the map.

I used the horse a ton in Ghost of Tsushima. I also find the horse in this game to be like perfect as far as control goes. It responds fast and just makes moving around very easy. It should be the gold standard on how to control horses in games lol. I too find myself not using it that much either though because of fast travel primarily when I want to get to places far away. The load times on fast travel on PS5 are ridiculously fast.

I like the horse for attacking larger groups. I feel it's easier to move around the edges of the pack and pick one off at time by making passes back and forth. I also found out later that L1 and R1 swing on opposite sides of the horse. I wish using a bow was a little more straight forward when mounted. My biggest frustration is hitting L3 willing turning sharply. Was fighting one of the huge above land mini-bosses and dismounted in the middle of battle.

I had no clue L3 dismounted you. I was always holding triangle and pressing up (the way I call him).

There is a default way to call the horse? I thought you had to set the ring you get on the directional pad, then hold x and press the direction in which you placed the ring.

I wish there was an easier way to call him. Sometimes I'm in a real bad situation and end up dying because I have to perform 2 actions to call the horse. I also prefer using him to do attacks on small groups or even the large knights too.

You have to map the ring to a quick action button. I also mapped mine to X and Up, but have built up the muscle memory to call him quickly. I just made sure to set that as the quick action across all my characters.

Has anyone beat the Night's calvary that spawns only at night near the southern portion of the map? I know he drops an ashes of war shield barricade that blocks 100% of attacks.

Been trying to attack him on horse as well as on foot but his weapon he uses always gets me. I'm level 20 but my broad sword is not upgraded yet so I'm not sure if I should even be trying to fight him but I really want that sheild perk before I go to the castle.

Though his attack was a lot easier to dodge than Tree Sentinel's, though I did both fights on foot. Make sure to target him and not the horse as if you kill the horse he'll just respawn it 30 seconds later. Probably should upgrade your weapon as early as possible though.

Last night I found the tunnel that had like a bajillion smithing stones in it so now I can get my samurai sword to +3 from +2. I also have a +7 spear I found that I've been using against certain enemies. And the pick hammer I have also is great for certain enemies. I may upgrade that too.

Is there really any reason to upgrade a crossbow? It seems like all it does is make the melee with it stronger. Does it make the bolts do more damage too?

It should or at least that's how it worked in other Souls games.

I've found the brass sheild which does 100% block on damage. I also noticed it's easier to just block on foot and then R1 right away or r2 but he usually gets me. The trick is to avoid as much as possible his flail weapon when he's swinging it.

I think I will have to take some time and upgrade my weapon first and see if I can get some more damage on him.

I tried foot but had to turn to mount. I would just make sure to do a burst when getting close and then circle to his back. Won't lie, took me a dozen tries to get the timing down.

I definitely want to play a build with a shield next time, as I miss parrying everyone. But my samurai build works so much better without one. Also want to do a magic build at some point. This game seems like it'll have the replay value of Skyrim where I did my first playthrough as a nord, second as a khajit sneak assassin, third as a dark elf mage, and fourth with an orc tank build.

I know he's an optional boss, but Crucible Knight was pretty freaking tough for an early game boss. I had my best luck running up and doing a sheathe heavy attack when I'd dodge his shield pound, and then in phase 2 when he flew at me I'd roll backwards and catch him with another heavy sheathe attack in the opening after he landed, though his tail and especially double tail attack he does after getting hit from behind upon landing can be tough to dodge. Otherwise not a ton of openings without really exposing yourself.

Finding the timing on mount is very difficult. His movement of the weapon is too quick and it's difficult to get close to him to attack on the side where he doesn't have the weapon.

I ended up knocking him off the horse and then doing a critical attack. But unfortunately he still had a lot of health left and I didn't.

This game is so frustrating and rewarding at the same time. Don't know how many trips I made to fight Rennala and kept getting wiped in the second phase. This morning, went and did a few other side quests, changed my weapon to Heavy and came back and beat her without being hit. I'm at 9 unlocks as far as boss/story progress goes.

Speaking of frustrating, I have been dual handing the uchigatana the whole game because I don't want a shield's special attack (usually parry) overriding the unsheathe special attack from the uchigatana. Then I find there is an ash or war called "No Skill" which lets me remove the special skill from the shield so I could use a shield and still have unsheathe available from my uchigatana. Oh well I thought, at least I'm doing more damage with the uchigatana by dual handing it. Did a test against some sort of stronger enemies and nope, not a damn bit of difference single or dual handing whether for light attack, heavy attack, charge attack, jump attack, or either of the unsheathe attacks. So basically I have been playing without a shield for no reason whatsoever. Fine for bosses, I hate using shields against bosses, but makes dungeon runs way harder without using shields.

This game sucked me in right away, more so than the couple hours I played of Horizon:FW. Guess I’m doing a run through of this one first! Wish stupid Sony would release their VRR capability though.

Man, this game is kicking my ass. My son is already a master at this game and he literally laughs at me when he sees me playing. He is also a master at the darksouls and bloodborne games. Me, I am such a newb even tho I got him into gaming years ago.

Yup it's an addicting game. Only problem I have with it is it's totally up to you if you don't follow a guide or don't understand how and when to level up what.

I also seem to have bad luck exploring to find new weapons.

How do you do the unsheathed attack while holding something in your left hand? I always go two handed when I want to do that because holding L2 does other stuff depending what is in my left hand.

You have to use the "No Skill" ash of war to remove the skill from say your shield or bow. Though I have gotten so used to the moveset of dual handing the uchigatana and just dodging damage that I haven't gone back to using a shield lol.

God this game is incredible though: combining the exploration of Skyrim with the combat of Dark Souls 3. I can see why this game cleaned up with so many 10/10 reviews. At this point about 35 hours in I think it's definitely better than God of War and might move on to challenging my two favorite games of the century: Bloodborne and NieR Automata.

Yes, this game is habit forming. Mind you, this is just on the PC. I also have a play through on the PS5 going, but not as many hours. Trying to still work and see the family
