Hey all,
I'm currently in the process of building my first system on a fairly tight budget. After a fair bit of research I've decided to go with the 8RGA+.
I plan on ordering an Antec SLK3700AMB case(67.35 shipped from ETW) and an Athlon XP 1700+ tbred processor($41 shipped from newegg, anyone know if this'll be an A or B?) to go along with the 8RGA+. I've already got a decent monitor and HD(Maxtor Diamondmax+ 120 gig.)
The only trepidations I have come from all the ram issues I've been seeing in forums such as this.
I plan on getting one stick of 512mb ram at the moment(and another shortly, along with a decent video card, when I have the funds.) I plan on doing some modest overclocking hopefully, nothing too intensive.
So, all need is to decide what ram to order. I was hoping to use this $25 off offer from crucial (from this link) but I've read crucial might not be the best for this board.
If anyone here can give me a recommendation for what ram to get and where at a decent price that would be great. Something that will go well with this setup, hopefully not too much more than $50 or so if possible.
Thanks.

Some people don't like Geil, but I've had good luck with it. I've got 2 sticks of this in my main system, running at 205Mhz, dual channel mode. It's working just fine for me.

Well, it looks like the "bad batch" theory may be true... at least, I've seen no problems yet. Memtest and 3dmark2001 (yuck) have both looped quite a few time with the hardware at default settings and all is well.

I think I'll get ambitious and determine what the memory is capable of.

Lastest 8RDA+ BIOS here, 8RDA3609.BIN

Fixed:
1) Update BPL to V3.02 R1.
2) Support auto detect Thorton CPU.
3) For fix MCP2/A04 USB signal clock jitter.

I tried it and it's fine for me. Now WCREDIT "cool bit" working on 8RDA+. My idle temperature has dropped a whole 10C, from 52C to 41C!!!

What did you have to do to enable the WPCREDIT idle temp mod? I've done it on my old kt266a but can't find any information about doing it on the 8rda.

I ordered a new 8RDA+ from newegg last Thursday. It arrived at the Fedex location at 7:10 Friday morning - and the idiots refused to deliver it until the next Tuesday after 4pm! So I drove to the FedEx sorting facility and picked the durn thing up myself. Get back to the office, open the box - and it appears to be a refurb?!? WTF? I call them up, they (Carlos) are very nice, and even say they will pay the shipping back. So now that I'm covered, I take a closer look. And it appears that perhaps it is not a refurb, but something is not right. Once I remove it from the bag, and examine the back, I see that the hs on the northbride is loose - one of the plastic pins is loose, allowin the hs to move around, and in shipping this has pushed the bag enough to open it. But there appears to be no damage, and even gives me a no touble view of the NB chip. It's the SPP, A1 (refered to as the C1), and A3 on the SB, ver 1.1 on the board. Ok, I set the NB hs properly (that pin gives me trouble but finally works), and jump in with both feet.

Taking no precautions beyond ghosting my hard drive to another, I gut my main box, removing the old KT400 m/b. In goes the 8RDA+, the 2500+ with retail hsf and thermal pad, the PC3200, the Ti 4600. Everything connected, let's start the show and see if she works. Power on, blinking lights on the front, and she starts! Right to seeing the chip as a 1100Mhz, counting memory....so I enter the bios, and check to see that it is set to display the full screen logo (it is) and the EPA logo (it is), and manually change the fsb from 100 to 166. Reboot, still no foolscreen logo, no EPA logo. Update to the latest BIOS version. No change. Several questions here:

1) where does it give the 400Mhz fsb "Ultra" message? I don't see it anywhere.
2) Should it not see my 2500+ as 166fsb automatically?
3) Shouldn't it also show to 2 logos on boot?
4) Are these problems, or are these issues 'normal' for the board?

Still eager to see what I can do with this puppy outside of these issues, I press on. Winbows gacks and won't load, that's expected. Even in safe mode no go, I had hopes, but it almost never works for 2000 or XP unless the mobos are very very similar. Try the Install but then repair found installation option to get it up and running, but dies no matter what I do, change hardware and settings, all sorts of BSODs. BSODs? Not under WinXP!!!! yea, right.....you just get much more information on why your system has gone belly up. What to do, what to do....

Ok, connect the hard drive to the old motherboard, move the hsf and chip back, get winblows running in safe mode over there. From reading this thread, I figure it's got to be the Ti 4600 drivers, so I remove them and shutdown (I should have removed the network card at the same time!!!!). Move the drive, chips, hsf back to the 8RDA+, and I am then able to recover windows, without any drivers for the stuff on the 8RDA+. put the CD in, install the drivers. Seems to work, mostly, although the install is as lame as you would expect. Worse, enough hardware is being added at one time that it forces me to reacetivate my install, and of course the network is not configured yet, so I have to call and get grilled by microdorks at 3 am before being allowed to reactivate. When done there is no control panel item for the soundstorm, I have to go back and install it manually. Next up, getting winblow up to date, on to windowsupdate.microsoft.com. There's a newer driver for the sound, better load it! reboot, and my rear channel sound is gone, never to return. thank you Microbastards! Ok, reload the nvidia driver, then. Half way through, the screen goes blank, and the system reboots. I never am able to get that installation of Windows to again boot. Thank you ghost!

Another ghosting session to create a fresh copy of installation, I start again. The windows Install-then repair found installation works, and this time I'm smart enough not to run the driver installation. Instead I load the network drivers manually from the CD, and setup the network. It compains that another card as the same settings (that's why I should have removed the old network card when I had the chance!). I proceed to manually load all of the drivers. This works, no reactivation required, go figure. Evertything but USB 2 is working well, because I don't want to install SP 1. But Winamp 2.8 did not play output to the rear speakers, so I did have to update to Winamp 3, which fixed that.

All in all, nice board in general, although it appears to have some minor problems that a replacement will hopefully fix. Outside of that, I am running my 2500+ at 10x200 with stock hsf and fan and memory set to CL2, no problems at all. But if you think I've not gone into enough detail, let me know....

1) ?
2) no, go into bios/Advanced Chipset Features and switch it manually; it is set to 100 by default
3)no, go into bios/Advanced BIOS Features and turn the logo screen features to enables; they are set not to show by default
4) you just need to go through your BIOS again and get your settings how you like them

btw, Have you tried Magic Flash Bios software Epox is now giving out with their boards. It makes flashing the bios very easy and more user friendly

Hi all, great little mobo the 8RDA+

I got one recently & added a 1700b JIUHB 0312 cpu and a stick of TwinMos PC3200.

Doggone it if I can't OC past 10x 219fsb with timings of 3-2-2-2.0 though (1/1 ratio of course)

I set the thing originally at 6-2-2-2.5
Dropped it to 6-2-2-2.0 - perfectly stable
Went down to 5-2-2-2.0 again stable.
Raised to 220fsb, got lock ups in Windows XP :|
Tried it at 6-2-2-2: no joy
Went back to 219 fsb - good stability again
Tried 4-2-2-2.0 and got good stability there
Thought WTH & dropped it to 3-2-2-2.0 and it was still running great at 219 fsb
So I have this little $40 processor with a stick of $40 ram I got here on AT FS forum and this nice $85 mobo I got from Newegg
"Life just doesn't get any better than this"...

Any thoughts on what I might do to get this thing running faster, or should I just settle here?
I'm familiar with the concept of "enough is enough" but with overclocking when is enough really "enough"?

Oh yeah, I run Seti@Home and this baby pumps out -2hr WU's - some are a little over and some a little under 2 hours.
I've been running seti for over 4 years, this is the best system I've ever had running the project!
Even better than my A7N8X Deluxe!

What a great testament to a wonderful motherboard Wiz. I love mine too, but I was never able to get my FSB above 198MHz. My Vdd was too low (1.58V). I am in the process of making the best DDR333 system known to man, though. I have 1GB of Kingston HyperX PC2700 and I will be getting a Barton 2500+ this week. When I get it, I will run the chip at 13x 166MHz to give me an AthlonXP Barton 3000+. I am really excited about this. My system is already super fast with my 2100+ @2700+. I can't wait to fire up UT2003 with the Barton installed.

tempting, how did this work out for you?

I am having slight audio problems with the 2.41 driver

I haven't done it yet newuser, and actually I might hold off for a week or so. I am buying a Barton tonight so when I get the chip I'll do the install then.

I am building up a system for a Epox 8rda+ but I am having some problems.

System
C1 board stepping
Antec 350 W power supply
Athlon XP barton 2500+
ATI Radeon 8500
Crucial pc3200 memory
WD 80 gig drive

Here is the problem.

When the system is booted from power off it will most of the time stop at 2b error code.

If I reboot using reset after this happens it will never boot.

I have to power off (using PS switch) and on until it boots.

Once it boots sucessfully it will boot with no problems using reset.

Thanks

Dave

One other thing.

Epox tech support won't tell me what the 2b error code is.

They just keep saying it is the power supply and/or update to the 6/09 bios. This bios is not even on there web site.

Thanks,

David

installed these drivers today
did not see any improvements, if anything the system seems to lag more than before but this could be from something else.
I will be reverting back to the last drivers

EPoX 8RDA3+ review here@OCworkbench .

we managed to run it at 230MHz x 10 on our AXP 2400+ processor, vcore 1.7v, vdimm 2.7v, vdd 1.8v.

Overall, the board is stable throughout our tests using various dual sticks from Corsair to Kingston to Buffalo.

Just got my setup from Newegg, and pretty darn impressed:

Barton 2500+ (0322 manufacture date, forgot to write down stepping code) - Retail Version
Epox 8RDA+ (couldn't make heads or tails about the chipset stepping version, but didn't notice the 400Mhz message after flashing the 06/09 BIOS if that means anything)
512MB Corsair DDR3200 ($95 version) x 2 (set in Dual Channel)
Volcano 11 HSF
GF4 4200 128MB (already had this)
WD 120GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache Hard Drive (had this from before too)
400W Power supply (fairly generic 2 fan version, bought this locally)

Off the bat, POST'ed fine, reinstalled XP Pro, flashed BIOS (06/09 release date) installed nForce drivers from CD.

Ran 3DMark2001SE, everything stock speed, hit over 11000.

OC'd the video card to my normal overclock (305/542) and hit 12400.

Ok, time to have fun. Started messing with my FSB/Multiplier. Couldn't hit 200Mhz (would reset back to Athlon 1100+ setting) on the FSB, but hit 198FSB and was solid at the "Optimal" memory setting. Started throwing multiplier bumps in. Got to 11.5x198. Sandra shows as 2.29Ghz (at a 199Mhz FSB). 3DMark2001SE quite stable, temp at 38.0C at idle. Didn't go further (might see what 12x198 looks like in a day or two).

Stress test and memory tweaks will be coming later. For now, really enjoying this setup!

Way to go paladiin. Sounds like you and I have 8RDA+ boards from the same batch. My board wouldn't go above 198MHz FSB either. I attribute that to a low Vdd of 1.58V. I have a 2500+ on the way as we speak, I'm just hoping to get it to 13x166MHz giving me a 3000+ chip. Good luck with your overclocking.

Well stress tests are in, and aren't promising.

12x198FSB (at 1.7v for CPU) and 39.0C idle, can run single instance 3DMark2001SE benchmarks without a problem. However, I would get crashing about 10 - 20 minutes in. Also had several crashes while testing in Everquest (the Bazaar still brings this system to its knees).

Lowered CPU to 11.5x190 (at 1.7v). 38C at idle. Again, didn't pass 3DMark2001SE looping test.

Lowered CPU to 10.5x183 (at 1.65v), 36C at idle. Video card set back to stock speed. Again failed 3DMark2001SE looping after about 15 minutes.

That's not looking too good.

Will try back at normal 2500+ speeds tonight. If I get fails looping at this speed, anyone have any suggestions to try? I'm confident it's not cooling, since I haven't seen over 41C yet on stress testing.
